Coton Connection: - Cold Weather and Cotons - Issue# 119 January 29, 2025 |
Welcome Coton Lovers:Happy New YearI hope you had a wonderful holiday and that 2025 is good to you and your Cotons. I know it’s already been a challenging start to those of you in the LA area. My heart goes out to all of you who have been affected by the fires. Please know that I’m thinking of you during this challenging time and sending my deepest care and support your way. Brrr - Caring for Cotons in cold weatherAnother challenge 2025 has brought us (at least to those in the US) is a winter chill that’s hard to ignore! Even here in Florida, where I’ve spent most of my life enjoying the warm winters, the cold has overstayed its welcome - I don’t think I’ve ever had my heat on this long. For those of you braving icy winds, snow-covered sidewalks, and frosty mornings, I can’t imagine how challenging it is for you. While Cotons are adorable playing in the sun or all bundled up in winter gear and booties, dealing with these conditions daily is no small feat. Prevention is the key to keeping your dog warm, safe, and happy in the cold.
Cold Weather and Cotons: What You Should Know1. Not All Cotons Feel the Same About ColdJust like us, Cotons have their preferences! Some Cotons can’t get enough of playing in the snow, while others would rather stay snuggled indoors. Either way, preparation is key before heading outside. Puppies, seniors, and dogs with health issues, in particular, struggle to regulate body temperature and can be at risk when temperatures dip below freezing. Small breeds like Cotons tend to feel the chill faster than larger dogs, so extra care is essential. 2. The Grooming Struggles Are RealIf you’ve ever dealt with a wet, matted coat, you know what I’m talking about. A wet Coton can quickly turn into a grooming nightmare, especially when snow, ice, or salt come into play. The right winter gear, like a snug jacket and booties, not only keeps your dog warm but can also save you hours of painful detangling later. 3. Protect Those Paws!Cold weather can wreak havoc on your dog’s paw pads, leaving them dry, cracked, and irritated. Add salt, ice, and harmful chemicals into the mix, and you’ve got a recipe for discomfort. Booties or paw balm can work wonders to shield their sensitive paws. Keeping Your Coton Cozy IndoorsDon’t forget the importance of creating a warm and inviting indoor environment for your Coton. A soft, warm bed or blanket can go a long way in helping them stay comfortable. If you notice their skin getting dry or itchy, a humidifier can add much-needed moisture to the air. Just make sure it’s placed somewhere safe where your dog can’t knock it over. For those of you looking for tried-and-true winter gear, I’ve compiled some of the top recommendations from the Coton community over the years.
