Coton Connection: - Dogs, Guests, and the Power of Being Present - Issue# 118 December 17, 2024 |
Welcome Coton Lovers:Help your dog when guests arriveWe had a visitor ask a question about how to get her dog to relax when visitors come to the house. I thought I’d share it here since many of you will be having guests during the holidays. Even dogs who aren’t usually fearful may get overwhelmed with a house full of noise, people, other animals, and a disruption to their normal routine. You can read my ideas to help your dog feel less anxious with visitors here. And add your own ideas of how to put your dog at ease when guests arrive at “their” house.
Presence over PresentsAnd while we’re talking holidays…as I was rushing about yesterday doing last minute holiday shopping, I looked around and so many people looked stressed and tired. And it made me pause and remember to slow down and enjoy this season. I get it - there’s a lot going on in our lives and in the world. But there’s also a lot of magic. Time moves so fast and these moments with your family and pets go by in the blink of an eye. Remember to be present and if you have to scratch something off your to-do list, it will probably go unnoticed. You deserve to pause and truly enjoy this season. When you do, it’s contagious - the people (and pets) around you will start to relax and share in that presence too. So this year, let your most valuable gift be just that: your presence. Thank You!I want to express my deepest gratitude for all the kind words and heartfelt condolences I received after Lucy’s passing. Hearing from so many of you - those who have experienced the pain of losing a beloved pet and those who are anticipating the loss of aging dogs - has been both comforting and humbling. Looking back on my almost four years with Lucy, if there’s one thing I could change, it would be to worry less. So much of the time I spent worrying about her could have been spent fully enjoying the moments we had together. For those of you with older dogs, I encourage you to savor this time. Be present with them today rather than worrying about tomorrow. I know it’s easier said than done, but worth it. I also want to take a moment to honor and say goodbye to beloved Cotons - Chauncey, Pierre, Selah, Jacques Cousteau, and Frankie. And there are countless others who I don’t know about. Each of you has left behind a legacy of love and countless cherished memories. You will be deeply missed.
