10 year old white coton suddenly develops red stains, eye, mouth, paw, tail

by Carol
(Austin, TX)

My coton has always been snow white due to extra special care of water, no food from China, etc. etc. Recently developed red stain on eyes, paws, mouth, bootie. Tried Angel Eyes, and all suggestions. Groomer also at a loss. Recently Booda Bones were discontinued and that was her favorite treat. She eats Blue Buffalo, treats are chicken wrapped in sweet potato and baked that we make. Help Please. We live in Austin, TX, she is 10 yrs. 9 lbs. still frisky and takes two walks a day.

Thank you.

Could possibly be from the soil your dog is walking on and sniffing .
Be careful with allergy pills with your Coton, treat them like two year old children , a -4 of a child's Benedryl tablet is more than enough, my dog threw up from it so I don't give it to him any more.

Red stains NEW
by: Iris

A clue to your dogs red stains may come from her food, the sweet potatoe treats have carotene the natural color of carrots and sweet potatoes and other red orange food and plants. Also, most dog foods are colored to look like meat with the deep red color taken from beets. .
Once my parents went on a carrot juice diet and both of them looked like their skin was tanned orange!
Just be on the lookout that your dog is not scratching or chewing on herself because it could be hot spots and they can very quickly develops into a serious secondary infection .
My dog Tuffy got that and had to have cortisone shots and antibiotics and prednisone applied to the hot spots and had to wear the E collar to prevent him from licking and chewing it., that all started with an itchy allergic reaction, probably combination allergy and flea bite saliva because no fleas are on him but I'm told they can bite and jump off( I use flea preventive topical monthly( now every 3 weeks per his Veterinarian, I also towel off his paws and body every single time we come in the house and check for hit hikers, Tuffy sleeps in my bed. Good luck and hope you figure it out.
Love Tuffy and mom Iris .

We're having the same problem with our coton. Our Vet said it was an allergy, most likely to grass. Their saliva turns their fur red. She suggested wiping his feet with a wet cloth when he comes in. Also giving 1/2 of a pill of Benadryl or Claritin. We're going to try this.
