3-4 hours after meal time for peeing?

Hello :)

I have a new 9 week old Coton pup. She has been with us for three days and luckily I am home so that I can train her. She doesn't always have to pee/poo 20 mins after a meal (in fact, this happened only once in three days).

She ate at 7:15 this morning and it is now 10:40 and she is asleep under the table. I have taken her out a few times, (once an hour or when i see her sniffing) no longer than 3-5 minutes so that she knows it isn't play time but so far, nothing.

Is it normal for a pup to not go for this long? I'm worried that she is stressed out and holding it, although total she went 7 times yesterday (she had already gone 3x by this hour yesterday including the 4:20 am wake up call). We have had a few 10 minute play sessions. Yesterday I noticed that she often goes after playing hard for a while.

I feel neurotic. It's only been a few days and I know she won't be trained yet but I wish she had some sort of pattern, maybe I just need to give us some more time to get to know each other

Any thoughts?

Thanks :)
Caity and Flora the pup.

So helpful! NEW
by: Caitlin

Feel so much better reading your comments, thank goodness for this site!

She sleeps in her crate by our bed with the door open, she wanders in and out of her crate during the day, also with the door open. If it is closed too long, she gets agitated, but I never open while she is crying.

I am going to try to leave the house today after breakfast and some decent exercise. She seems fine when I am in another room but not great when I leave the apartment.

She had another accident free night, that hasn't been a problem, she woke us up at 5:45, not bad!

When I figure out how to post pics, I will :)

Give it time, puppy months are little stressful, specially if you are a new pet owner. Cotons are very smart, and adapt so quickly. Slowly set a schedule and try to stick to it. Treat and praise always when she does her buisness outside. Our coton has a unique way of letting us know when hes ready to go, he gives a specific stare, and sort of grunts, and will just sit by the door. It took a good amount of time to get there, but it happens eventually. Stick to a set schedule, and you will be suprised how your little girl will catch on.

Hi Caity, You sound like I was when I first got Cotton. I was so nervous about everything, wanting to be the perfect mom. It sounds as though you are doing fine and believe me there is no certain amount of time for any of this.......I would take Cotton out every hour-sometime with no success but like you are doing-when she does something---lots of praise!

You will find some days they want out more often, sometimes I think it is just to get our attention as these little dogs are so very smart. For whatever reason each day at least for mine is different.
Keep taking Flora out often and you will be fine.

Congrats on your new baby and whenever possible I know we would all love to see her picture.

Congratulations on your new baby.. NEW

Welcome Caity & Flora.. You found the right site. I'm a first time puppy mommy & my 12 week old Beau came home with me 2 weeks ago. Like you, I have lots of time to spend with him but I'm often feeling totally neurotic too.. When he's dozing, I let him doze even if it should be 'potty time'. He was pretty good with potty training until I introduced wet food & then the accidents increased. A few challenging days later, he's adjusting much better. I'm trying to learn to 'go with the flow' more and let nature take it's course. Where does your girl stay during the day? Are you using a crate? Would love to know more as we are both so new to this world..

Phew NEW
by: Caitlin

I feel better :)

The breeder had her trained on pee pads which we have chosen not to continue, so she might be really confused for a few days.

She is getting 1/3 c of puppy food 3 times a day as per instructions. She has free access to water and drinks just over a cup a day.

I read about not exercising them too much as puppies because of their bones but we went out today for a longer walk and she started running and was so happy abut it that we went with it. Afterwards, she was much happier and calmer than she had been all day, plus she peed outside (praise, praise, praise!!). So I think that more exercise might be a great answer. We play all day, but running around is different :)

Fingers crossed, she is so precious, I just want us to all have fun together!

Congratulations NEW

I remember feeling the same way when I got my Coton puppy. It had been years since I had a puppy and I worried about every little thing. It's kind of like first time parents when you're so scared you're going to make a huge mistake and screw up your child for life.

It's normal to feel a little nervous, especially if you haven't been around puppies for a while. These dogs are pretty resilient and you can't really make a mistake; just enjoy your new baby - they grow up way too fast :)

Pups Pee NEW
by: Lily's Mom

I would contact your breeder and find out what kind of schedule your pup was on, maybe that is normal for her? Make sure your pup is getting enough water and/or food? My experience with my baby at that age was pretty much peeing every one and half hours or so, after play time, after a nap, etc....however, she could hold it fine all night in her crate while sleeping.

Thanks for your reply :)

Should I still wake her up and get her out every hour if she is fast asleep? Training guides say to do this but she still sleeps a lot during the day and I feel like I should just let her.

I left the house (my husband was home) for 1.5 hours today and after having not peed, she peed 4 x and pooped while I was gone. My husband says she was mega anxious, so you are probably right... I'll go do some breathing exercises now...

Don't be hard on yourself. Your puppy will sense the anxiety. I suggest that you relax and let nature take it's course. This is a very smart and intuitive breed. Your little one will adjust. Enjpy your new baby.
