At wits end

by Norah
(USA)

I have a Coton who shakes and just gets on the couch and does all things that he should not do when he wants to go outside. He can even make himself vomit. I am at my wits end. He does not mind me. He is NOW afraid of loud noises whereas before he wasn't. He barks and barks until he gets what he wants. What can I do besides give him away? My other coton would just be so :(

Any suggestions?

what not to do
by: Anonymous

It sound like your dog is stressed. Please do not yell at him or reprimand him for trying to let you know he is fearful and needs your attention and help. My Coton has separation anxiety and sometimes throws up too. They don't "make" themselves throw up (unless they are choking on a piece of food or had undigested food that comes up because their nervous or have to go potty). I know this from watching my dog's behavior. You can teach them to be quiet by using a low soft whisper when you tell them soft voice, or no barking, and always praise when they obey. Sometimes it works, sometimes they need to bark to warn you. Extra puppy classes do help some. It's ongoing. A lot of love and patience rewards both you and your dog. Good luck.

Training
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

The PX stands for Phoenix as in Phoenix AZ. Whatever city u live in substitute ur city for Phoenix & look up ur local grp. They also r involved in agility or field trials for field dogs. If u like agility the 1st class u go thru is basic obedience before u start anything else.

U also can work at the agility shows & get credit toward the price of the classes. Their r also other agility clubs in towns ex. Jumping Chollas etc.

Sorry I used the abbreviation.

Your Coton needs training. This is a very smart breed and he will be happier and you will be happier when he behaves. If you can afford to have a trainer come to your house a few times and give you pointers, the outcome should be good for all of you. You didn't say how old he is, but it's never too late to learn. Good luck.

Px field & Obedience
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

In ur town I am sure u have this type of group. U start off w/basic obedience grps they usually go 8 wks at a time. Most the time they r held in a high school near ur house in their football field. I am not sure what location u live in if u may have snow on the ground now or not. This type of club gets cheaper as u go.

Most pet stores also have them indoors. It is fun & u meet great people. It helps give u a diff. perspective on training & discipline techniques.

Also daily walks will help w/an over active dog also potty & will help him learn noises r not scary. If u live in a country area get a good trick book which will help teach quiet & also by learning tricks all else fall in line since they now have a purpose it also brings their attention back to u as far as listening.

There r alot of good books out there I like one called "101 dog Tricks" by Kara Sundance. It gives u step by step & pictures. I got it at Petco for $20. The nice thing about Petco & book stores is spend time reading thru the book before u purchase to see if it is the right one for u. Good luck if u live close to me here in Glendale Az I will be glad to help.
