Barking

by Janice
(Greensboro, N.C.)

He acts as if he's on guard duty. If anyone is walking on the sidewalk across the street from us, he barks and barks. I scold him and tell him to go to bed, which he does. After he stays in his bed for a few minutes, he's fine. He really loves his crate because he gets milkbones when it's bedtime or whenever we have to leave him at home alone. I just wish that he would stop barking at people that are passing by. Of course, when someone comes to our door, it's the same situation......but worse. How can I stop this behavior? He doesn't like strangers. He's 2 years old.

barking NEW
by: Bruce

I have learned from my cotton that he owns all the land around him and will bark it everyone in it. he barks for this your joy of coming home after a trip, he barks at other dogs, he barks at anyone in HIS territory.
We discovered the PetSafe (petsafe.net) bark collar. Works great, after he gets used to it you don't even have to turn it on. As long as he's wearing it he's quiet as a church mouse. When he barks it sprays a small amount of citronella. After the first bark he's quiet but he smells like a lemon for
a little while.
DO NOT BUY AN ELECTRIC SHOCK COLLAR!!!

Patience
by: Gaston

My old Coton Gaston was so bad at the door, even though he grew up in the country & learned about doorbells later on. When I got Jacques Cousteau this was an issue that I wanted a plan for. Which is to have him sit quietly if he wants the door to open. It takes sometime & understanding from guests. But it's so worth it! He still barks to alert, but then sits if someone is there!

This worked for us
by: Anonymous

Bailey (10 months old) is the same way. Except we have the added pleasure of her barking at anything that moves when we go on walks, which is about 5 times a day. My daughter came up with the idea of using a spray bottle of water and spritzing her when she starts barking. I didn't have high hopes, but it's worked amazingly well. At a minimum, it stops the crazy barking by startling her momentarily. Then she just woofs lightly until the "offender" has passed on. But mostly she just whines when she sees someone now, rather than bark. Oh, and here's the kicker. We just started this last week. Results were fast for us!

I hope you give this a try and find success. It doesn't hurt them at all (avoid the eyes) and hopefully will work for you.
