CHRISTMAS TREES

by Narita

For the last 2 years I have not had a Christmas tree. I want one, but Bill is insane about balls, anything round! He begs for an orange when bring in a bag thinking I am not sharing my toys! If apples or tomatoes are left in a bag on the floor while I am putting things up they are taken. He even rolled a pumpkin bigger than him when he was a puppy.

You see where this is going. I do not cage Bill or put him in a room when I leave has he has severe anxiety and destroys the door or gate. He is good and doesn't get into things when I am gone. He sits on the back of the couch and waits for me, looking out the window.

First of all I am afraid to put my glass ball ornaments on it and I have so many pretty antique ones. I don't want a table tree but also I feel he will try to jump up at it too. You know how high a Coton can jump!!! He also loves stuffed toys which he shreds in record time, so little felt type ornaments will not do either.

The tree has to sit in front of the window where his beloved couch is. At my daughter's house Christmas she had felt ornaments and he didn't bother them but we didn't leave him alone with them, and his fur relatives were there to distract.
Sorry this is so long. I really want a tree this year as my husband died last year and I think it would help cheer me some. But I don't want to hurt my furbaby. I know there is probably no answer but I thought I would throw it out there.

Bill & balls & Christmas! NEW
by: Truffles Mom

So maybe there is a way to have a tree & use some ornaments after all.

The year I obtained Truffles my mom decided to have Christmas at her house. Prior to that she did not since my Daddy passed, 5 years ago.

So my first thought was why decorate my house & have to take it all down if only I am going to look at it? I love to decorate though but the thought if the the big tree for only me was no fun. I have a thing for soft white lights though & they are all over the garden & the house all year round. So anyway......

I'm at Bed bath & beyond & fell in live with a large (6-7 feet maybe)pre lit palm tree! I had my 20% coupon to boot so I justified I'd put it on the porch after Christmas. It remain in my foyer to this day since I loved the lighting!

I have to post a picture / not currently on my phone. Its with Truffles & all the presents under the tree. Since I live in Florida now, I thought it was cute to show all up north.;)

So the ornaments hung high, granted not a lot of them but there was enough & no dog could reach.

(Truffles does to socks what Bill does to balls- if they are bright socks he will bark at your feet until you give them to him)

Amazing how these cute furry little creatures can shred a teddy bear is seconds, lol!

Keep us posted on your tree!

Xmas tree NEW
by: Sharon and Jasmine

My pup is 14 months old and last Xmas was her 1st. I put up 7 trees and she only had a good look and a few swats at the ornaments. I only put plastic on the bottom of some trees and nothing on the bottom of others. I let her look at them and the lights. Encouraged her to sit under the trees with the cats. It all worked out. No wrecked ornaments and no trees falling down - yes my cats have knocked them down a few times. I think if you don't make the tree a big deal your pooch will leave it alone. Hope this Xmas is happier for you.

Christmas Tree NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

Since Bill is 2 possibly some of the excitement toward your tree may come to an end. Put your tree up now. Add lights if you like. See if he bothers it & if he starts to mess w/it tell him no or leave it or what ever command u use.

Once he loses interest u can put some test balls on it but up but only from top to half way down. You can use cheap ones for now but any tree even w/cheap ones hopefully lift your spirit. I am so sorry for your loss.

See How Bill reacts if he doesn't for a couple weeks put your favorites on from top to half way. Let's say if he tends to leave it alone put the cheap ones down a little lower but until your sure he may have out grown or gets it that it is off limits I would not tempt him with low hanging.

If for this year u don't tempt w/low hanging out of sight out of mischievous actions won't occur. If all goes well then next yr he will b 3, older & puppyhood starts to disappear. If he does not know the fun of destroying a cheap bulb then as they get older they tend not to know they missed it & u can try all the way down.

Good luck let us know what works & May you have a Happy Holiday. Also that's a cute pic of Bill.

Christmas Tree Problem NEW
by: Jolie's Mom

I agree that bill has the cutest smile!! How can you not cheer up a little, when looking at that face?? And I am very sorry for the loss of your husband, but I know having this sweet boy around helps a lot. To help with your ornament problem, my Mom has some very pretty glass ornaments, that she displays in a tall, wide glass vase. You can find them at Hobby Lobby and they are inexpensive. Or you couold use different sizes, and have a few scattered aroound your home, det up high enough for bill to not be able to reach, but that way you can enjoy them with out the possibility of them getting broken on a tree. As for a tree, you can do as someone suggested and just put lights up and possibly use different colored fabric bows, Christmas flowers, or any number of things. I would love to see a Christmas tree done with family pictures, in small frames, whether bought or handmade. Maybe your family can get together and do something like this, so that you can have your tree, but also not worry that Bill will want to "play" with it too! I hope I've given you an idea or two, and if you DO put up a tree, PLEASE share some pics with us!

No Ho Ho NEW
by: Anonymous

Oh, what a great smile he has. We used to have a pup that did the same thing. So, we put the tree inside our daughter's playpen which acted as a barrier. Could you find something like that or a baby gate? Or maybe just put the balls at the very top of the tree where he won't see them and be tempted? Let us know how it goes.

Different decorations NEW
by: Marcia

I'm sorry for your loss. I do understand wanting to use your antique ornaments, but you can still have a nicely decorated tree without round ornaments. There are many ornaments available that are not round or felted.
