Coton de Tulear and potty training!!!

by Alecia Midgett
(Virginia)

WOW!!!!! FINALLY!!!! It took ONE FULL YEAR and Wilson is finally potty trained. We tried EVERYTHING. Gates, potty pads, bells on the door, walks every hour, going out every 15 minutes, treats, treats, treats!!!!! We did it all.

I was told one time that some babies take a long time....a year. Well WOOO HOOO. Chaytor stopped marking our house on his 1 year birthday. He has only had one accident (on a potty pad) when we were out for too long. I would have never thought that it would have taken so long. BUT WE ARE HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!!!!!!!

We loved Wilson when he was not potty trained...BUT WE LOVE LOVE LOVE him even more now that I am not spending every waking minute cleaning up behind him.

We kept with our treats!!

Still have a bell on the back door (he uses)

Gated off the front of the house with small gates from amazon (you can step over them and adjust them)

We did tell him he was a bad boy for going in the house and showed him the mistake. (I did not let him see me clean it up so that he did not see it as attention)

We did use enzemes on every single spot and even purchased a small pet carpet cleaner for every spot.

I put his toys and beds in every area that he liked to mark. His stuff was everywhere!!!

My husband did yell at him a few times and that really seemed to upset him.

I started making him wait to earn his food, made him wait for a treat before he could get it, never let him walk through a door before me...I became almost crazy dominate to him.

I hope this helps someone else having the same problems. There is light at the end of the tunnel. NEVER GIVE UP!!

Good Luck :o)

Congradulations
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

U worked really hard & deserve ur bragging rights.
I am glad ur efforts have finally given u the chance to take a breather. As Gale said we all have had that special one that was a challenge. I am lucky Jonah was a good puppy & for just turning 4 has been a breeze. Maybe it is because I have always worked from home so when I went out or such he was glad to have the house to himself. :)

Jonah loves walks, the dog park & when friends visit dogs are allowed. So congrad. & I am very happy for u. Be very proud of ur efforts & patience. Yea.........

POTTY TRAINED
by: SHERRY - COTTON

HATS OFF TO YOU ALECIA FOR ALL YOUR DETERMINATION!!
SOMETIMES IT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE BUT SO HAPPY FOR YOU. MY
GIRL IS 15 MOS. AND IS WONDERFUL ; BUT - WHEN WE LEAVE HER
FOR VERY LONG SHE WILL LET US KNOW SHE IS MAD BY LEAVING
EITHER A WET SPOT ON CARPET OR HER LITTLE TOOTSIES. I HAVE
HOPE THAT THIS WILL CHANGE EVENTUALLY.

WE ALL LOVE OUR DOGS SO MUCH THAT IT JUST IS NOT THAT BIG
OF A DEAL ANYMORE. I WILL SURE TRY DOING WHAT YOU DID
AND SEE IF IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

WAY TO GO WILSON! WHAT A GREAT BOY YOU HAVE BECOME.
MANY HAPPY YEARS TOGETHER.

Missy hates the rain!
by: Joan Keller

One year ago we had a four month old Coton and four month old carpet. What a surprise when we bought a black light. All is better now. She will go all night, about 12 hours. We can leave her and no accidents but if it is raining outside, she goes out, pretends to pee and later sneaks in the house to pee and poop in the laundry room or bathroom. What to do?

Good boy Wilson!
by: Gale

I can understand why you're so happy. You have a lot of patience and it finally paid off. I guess I was lucky that Luc was house trained so fast, but I've had dogs in the past that definitely were challenging to train. It's such a good feeling when you don't have to deal with all of that and you can just enjoy your dog.

Wilson's lucky to have people who love him and invested so much patience and energy into training him. Thanks for sharing your story - I'm sure this will help many others who are having similar potty training struggles.
