Coton de Tulear bites wayyyyy too hard :( NEW
by: Lisanne from Chicago

I am having the same issue with our new baby Fluffle. He is an 11 week old Coton ( we've had him since week 9) and this behavior just started this week. My forearms and hands are getting covered with tiny hard bites and bruises. And yes, I agree, IT HURTS!! Ive had dogs in the past, and never had this degree of biting or hard biting before. Ive tried putting the "yuck" spray on my fingers. It works for a few minutes, then he starts on my feet!! I have read that mother dogs address this behavior by giving a firm bark, followed by a gentle nip to the back of the neck, and a firm paw push down (to cease the behavior and let puppy know this isnt tolerated). Ive tried crying like a puppy, too, but apparently he thinks its a game (I guess I dont mimic a distressed puppy too well...lol)and bites even more :( Has anyone else heard of this? I know it will "pass in time" but I dont want to do anything in the meantime to inadvertently encourage this behavior. Is it all teething or is this an attention seeking behavior as well?

ALL breed of puppy nip and bite....
by: Anonymous

They don't have hands to pick things up with so the mouth is it. When mine starts biting too hard. I start grabbing a tooth and start holding on to it. They HATE that...I'll grab another tooth then another and so on until she starts licking my fingers. I have also put a drop of white vinegar on my index finger and when she bites my hand I make sure she gets "the finger". She stops biting abruptly and starts to try and get the (harmless) taste out of her mouth. The pick up quick!

Don't know if this works..
by: Anonymous

I don't know if this works. I never tried it on my dog..but I heard this trick where you put some butter on your finger and hold it in front of your dog. Let him lick it and say 'gentle' whenever he licks it. Do it a couple times for a couple days. The next time he bites, say gentle.

Positive reinforcement works best is what I keep hearing. I'm guessing you can even hold out your finger with nothing on it and say gentle and when your dog licks, give him/her a treat.

Not sure if itll work, but worth a try!

no teeth!
by: Iris

Our Coton's are very intelligent and learn quickly. Cry out in a high pitches whine, OW! OW!Be consistent and repeat the same command, hold his muzzle briefly say "no teeth!" or "no biting"! put a toy or rawhide bone in his mouth and say bite this, and move away, do not play if they don't stop. Tuffy likes to arm wrestle and rough house but knows I wil not play if he hurts me, and just like puppy play, if they cry, the one knows they hurt the other if they cry out.
Good luck and love,
Iris and Tuffy

Consistency in training is the key~
by: Anonymous

Our 13 week old Coton bit me on the leg so hard that I bruised (in the shape of a heart- no kidding!). BUT, it hurt! We consistently told him "no" and provided him with an alternative toy and he has stopped the biting altogether. They are such smart dogs; with consistency we have found him very trainable.

This too shall pass....
by: Anonymous

Our Coton too frighten me with her biting when she was a young dog. As a mature woman I did not expect that, or at least I forgot that about a young dog. She would really play rough, and I had to walk away many a time from that behavior......my words of wisdom to you is they eventually grow out of that. I really did not do too much to change that behavior other than walking away. This too shall pass....she is now the most affectionate, loving, cuddly companion at the age of two. I could not speak more highly about the Coton bread. Hang in there......

Puppy biting way to hard...
by: Deborah

First of all any biting is "NO"...and baby teeth are especially tiny and sharp...and in effect they are teething and need to chew on appropriate chews, toys,. We trained our two boys w/replacing the attempt to chew w/providing a chew toy....and they both know "no". Firm and consistency is of value. Good luck.

Bite too hard
by: Sevi

Our Coton, Tyche, used to bite as well at the beginning around 10-12 weeks and the way we cut it off was to immediately stop playing with her and say "no". she understood that no biting means playtime and biting means no play and fun.
She stopped it quite quickly. started again around teething period but then she was totally redirected to suitable toys for teething by still using the NO as verbal command.

Cotons tend to be spoiled cause they are so adorable and hard to resist but bad behaviours should be cut off the soonest possible before it becomes a habit :)

Good luck!

Coton biting!
by: Anonymous

Mine is 4 mths old and she has always done the same thing! We are having a hard time breaking her from it. Any suggestions would be appreciated! This is our first Coton. We have had other breeds but their biggest thing was licking not biting!
