Coton de Tulear pooping problem

by Lindsay

I can't seem to get my coton de tulear to stop pooping in the house... Every time I take him out he will pee... Just not poop... I'm thinking of trying to find a trainer, does anybody have any dog house training advice??? I could use all the help I can get!

Thanks!

The best advice I can give you is don't give your dog ACCESS to the house unless he's successfully went to the bathroom outside. Is your dog crate trained? If not, I think you should work on this right away. Then when you take him out and he doesn't go potty, immediately bring him back in and put him in his crate. Try again in half an hour. If he still doesn't go, he goes back in his crate. Keep doing this until he goes outside, and then give LOTS of praise and bring him in and play with him. You need to teach him that going outside gets him praise and attention, and you can't do that if you are allowing your dog to poop on your floor. Crate training is definitely the easiest way to house train any dog, because they won't go where they have to lie, so you can teach them that going outside is a good thing. Good luck!

don't let him back in until he poops..point to the yard and tell him to go poo poo..in a firm gentle voice..they are very smart..he'll catch on quick..my little boy is pee pad trained..we were in the spare bedroom..he was only maybe 4 mos then..i keep the door closed..to keep him out of that room..he started to pee while we were in there..i told him..you don't pee there..you pee on pee pads..he stopped and went right to his pee pad..they are smart and know what you're talking about..good luck..

potty training

All the advice here is good, walk your dog, get things moving, be consistent, at least 20 minutes to 1/2 hour after they eat a meal and drink water they usually need to go. Sometimes they use elimination to mark a spot with their scent especially if there was another dog who went there. (In the house the area needs a deep cleaning and deodorizer) because they can smell all the way through carpet and flooring and will continue to use the same area. Talk to your dog, use commands:get the leash say" go poopee outside? pick an area you want them to return to and tell themany of these commands "go pee, go poop, good dog, make poop here", etc. and praise!! Good dog!!! Good boy/ good girl!! made poopeee!!! (see other info here about potty training). They want to please us, and are happy to know they are doing a good job.Good luck!! and please don't get mad at your dog, they are dependent on us, so if we don't get their signals (they need to go, they can only hold it for so long, imagine how stressful and uncomfortable that must be.

Often times a dog won't poop immediately after they pee, so give him some time. Either walk him around a little (get things moving) or if you have a yard, leave him out a bit longer to see if he poops.

Is he pooping in the same place in the house? Try putting his food or treats in that spot. They won't poop where they eat. Sounds simple, but it worked for me with a Maltese years ago. Worth a try.

I have the same exact problem. Hired a trainer who said to take him out to he exact same spot each time outside on a leash. I just started doing this. It got better, but still a work in progress.
