Coton
by: Leah Palmer

Looking for a Coton that's 1 year or younger to adopt. It's just out of our price range to buy through a breeder. We recently lost our 13 1/2 year old Cavalier due to an enlarged heart and need another dog to love. We also have one very small cat who misses our dog and looks for him also. Please contact me at lk4rhema@gmail.com if you have a Coton you need to place in a new home. Thank you.

Maya needs a loving forever home
by: Sue

Linda, I am responding to your post from last month: "We are a senior couple looking to adopt a coton. An older or retired dog is fine with us. Southern California area (santa barbara to be exact). Transportation is available so the dog doesn't have to be local." I have a 3-yr old Coton de Tulear whom I would like to find a loving home for. She needs to be with an older adult (or adults). She needs a home without children and where she is the only pet. I have a flyer I can email you, if you send me your email address. She is very pretty, all white, extremely affectionate, loving and sweet. She loves to cuddle and imprints, or bonds strongly with, one person and becomes a velcro dog, sticking with them all of the time. She becomes very loyal to them She's an excellent companion. She is in San Diego right now. Please contact me at suenewfield7@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Coton up adoption
by: Sue

We have a beautiful Coton spayed male we need to sell. He just turned 4. We recently found out our child has an allergy to dogs. Sadly, Coton is no exception according to our doctor.
We are heartbroken. He is sweet, loving and a part of our family.
If you're interested and live in Florida, please call me.

I just saw a beautiful Coton de Tulear being surrendered at this shelter yesterday. my heart broke because I already own a Tibetan Terrier who doesn't get along well with other dogs, and couldn't take this dog home with us. If you are interested and live in the LA area, Frankie is the dog for you. He is well groomed and trained too!

This shelter has a 7 day hold policy, so you may have to wait til next Friday.

finding a coton
by: Anonymous

I wasn't willing to spend big bucks on a puppy - and I didn't really want the hassle of housebreaking. So I emailed all the area breeders (in SoCal) describing my family environment and asked that if they had a dog that needed rescue or retirement, they contact me. I got three responses, and am now the happy owner of a 3-year-old purebred coton that cost no more than adopting from a local shelter. The ages that were offered to me were 3 - 5 years - not seniors, as you might expect. Hard to believe, but someone who paid a lot of money for my dog actually wanted to give her up. Her loss, my gain. Nothing "wrong" with my dog at all. Open your heart to an adult dog and you will meet with success!

The cost of raising a dog
by: Gale

Iris, you raise very good points about the cost of raising a dog. We sometimes forget to think about the ongoing costs of raising a dog when we decide to get a new puppy.

I don't want to give anyone the impression though that the cost of owning a Coton is significantly higher than other breeds. At least, not from my experience.

I've owned dogs all my life, and they ALL require trips to the Vet, high quality food and treats, toys, beds, training, crates, boarding, replacing things they've chewed, etc.

The Coton does require more grooming than most dogs, though, so you should factor that in to your decision (approximately in the $50 price range for me monthly).

It can actually save you money to pay more for a dog up front from a reputable breeder who will guarantee the health of your dog and prevent potentially thousands of dollars at the Vet.

I think if I totalled what I spent in year for my animals I'd be shocked. But I can't imagine life without them and they are so worth it to me!!

Coton Breeder
by: Iris Miller

The breeder I purchased my Coton from is in the Bonnie Doon or Felton, California area in the Santa Cruz mountains. I don't know where you live, but if it is near the West Coast you might want to research it, look for ads in the local papers. That is how I found mine from a family of Coton Breeders, very reliable. The cost (2 years ago ) was $1000 for a male and $1200 for a female puppy. I had never owned a Coton before and did not realize what it was going to cost me. I soon found out that was the least of my expenses. A Coton is no ordinary dog, they are high maintenance and expensive to keep and feed, ie; vet fees, groomers, monthly preventive medicines.special food and treats, etc. I deny myself a lot to afford to take care of my dog. Please keep that consideration in mind before you take on more than you can afford. My dog is the love of my life and I would never give him up because of the expense, I have heard so many times of people giving up a dog because they can no longer afford to care for it.. I have also seen some for adoption on T.V. shows that resemble the Coton, so check that out, I would rescue one before buying one ( none were available at the time I bought my dog).. Good luck!

High Priced Pups
by: Gale

Hi Selena,

I understand what you mean about finding a Coton in your price range. This breed can be quite expensive. Prices fluctuate depending on your location and the reputation of the breeder, but I've seen average prices range from $1800 to $3000.

I would constantly check with UCARE and Petfinder for rescue dogs (http://www.cotonrescue.us/). There are still fees, but much lower than going through a breeder, plus you get to help a dog who really needs a home. I just checked and they don't have any dogs available right now - so just keep checking. I've heard from several people who found their Cotons this way.

There's always the Coton Clubs to find reputable breeders. By going through a club, you know you're getting a good quality puppy, but the price may be an issue there. Check out this page with links to some of the clubs. Coton Clubs.

Just a word of caution, there are those breeders who will sell Cotons over the internet at "cheap" prices. Be very very wary. Many of these dogs are often sickly and end up costing more in the long run.

Good luck and send a picture WHEN you find your little Coton dog.

How much does a Coton de Tulear rescue dog cost?

by Jean

I currently have a 1 year old Schnese female all white but am thinking of getting her a playmate. I guess I would need to know how much a Coton de Tulear rescue would cost. I know Cotons are very expensive and don't have a lot of money to purchase one.

I just have to say be very careful when buying a coton. When we were looking for one we ran into a lot of scams. So be very sure when you buy a coton that it is from trustworthy people. They are great dogs. I would love to have another one myself.

Coton Rescue Costs
by: Gale

The cost would depend on where you're obtaining your Coton.

Most rescues are usually all-volunteer organizations and survive on donations and small adoption fees. But you have to also consider possible additional costs associated with traveling to pick up the dog if necessary, providing veterinary care, vaccinations, having it spayed or neutered, and providing any necessary training. Of course, getting an older dog would cut down on some of these costs.

Also, unless you know how to groom yourself, the Coton requires professional grooming (usually monthly) that's approx. $40 to $60 depending on where you live.

Ucare (http://www.cotonrescue.us/) is the official Coton rescue organization and a great resource for any specific questions you may have.

I must say, I've never heard of a Schnese. But then again, most people have never heard of the Coton :)

Good luck on your search!!

How much does your Coton de Tulear cost yearly?

Hi, there are many different dog expenses especially throughout out the first year. How much did your Coton cost in total the first year? (ex: supplies, grooming, vet visits, training, meds, etc.) Do you think the coton is a higher maintenance dog then other breeds?

Thanks! :)

Dog costs
by: Tracy

Hi!
I just got my Coton a couple weeks ago, but from what I've researched, those costs above look about right. I plan to spend less on training - I'm enrolled in a pup Kindergarten class for about $80 and may take one more class this year; hopefully that'll be all we'll need in his first year.

For the food, I'm estimating only about $15/month at first. I'm guessing the 5 pound bag will last about 6 weeks and it costs something like $18. Of course, he'll eat more as he grows, though, of course.

And I think you're right; these are the costs of owning any dog, really. You might have less grooming with another breed, or spend more/less on training, but the first year can be spendy.

The cost of owning a Coton de Tulear
by: Gale

I wasn't sure I wanted to answer this question because I wasn't sure I wanted to think about how much money I spent for my 1st year with Luc. But here goes - here's the breakdown from what I can remember. I'm sure I did a lot of impulse buying but I won't count that.

Costs not counting purchase price of dog:

Vet (wellness check, neuter fee, microchip, vaccine, license, heartworm & flea prevention: $650

Food ($25/month) = 300

Accessories: (bed, crate, baby gate, leashes, collars, toys) = $350 (that I will admit to)

Grooming = $57/month (including tip) = $684

Professional Trainer = $500

Total cost for the 1st year = $2489

This did not include the things Luc destroyed (eye glasses, books, computer wires, etc) because that was totally my fault for not puppy proofing the house adequately.

The grooming costs will vary greatly depending on whether you hire a professional or do it yourself.

Hiring a professional trainer is also not necessary. This was the right choice for me and my lifestyle, but Cotons are pretty smart and learn fast so I don't think it was necessary.

Are Cotons more high maintenance or higher cost than other dogs? I would say that the grooming is the only area that I would say yes. Whether you do it yourself or hire someone, Cotons need grooming attention.

Except for grooming and the actual cost to purchase the dog, the Coton is not any higher maintenance than any other dog that I've owned.

Anyone else brave enough to tally up the costs?

What are the average expenses associated with owning a Coton in the first year?

by Rebecca
(USA)

My husband and I are currently looking at purchasing a Coton puppy from a local breeder. Before we purchase we want to be sure we have a full understanding of what expenses to expect in the first year. Also, we are wondering what specific shots/medical care they need in their first year. This is our first puppy and we want to be sure we are as prepared as we can be before we make the decision to purchase. Thank you so much for any information you can give us!

You will love this breed!
by: Kathy

Buying a Coton was the best investment I every made. I caution you to check out the breeder throughly. They are still a rare breed, therefore, make sure you know who you are buying from. Also, make sure you get all the pertinent information on your dogs lineage. I loved my Coton for the 14 years I had her. Lost her this past June and my heart still has not recovered. I thought I had loved dogs in the past, but my girl Chanel was the love of my life. They are extremely intelligent and incredibly loving.
I believe grooming is a must so that is the most expense you should have compared to any other dog!
Make sure the food you feed them is pure. Otherwise, enjoy years of unconditional love and companionship! I hope to get another puppy early next year. I love this breed and they are worth every penny you pay! We have 2 others in the family!

Remember your own time.
by: Connie

I concur with most of what has been expressed.
Connie is now 15 months old and has not been the cause of much extra expense, unless, you put a value on your time, because we spend considerable hours keeping her coat matt-free.
Grooming products have been the biggest expense, but well worth the investment.
Hope this comment is helpful.

Congrats on ur New Coton
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

Pretty much covered & I do concur that really they r a clean breed in health issues

Shots: 5-8 wks: Canine distemper-measles-CPI

14-16 weeks: DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, lepto, parainfluenza, parvovirus) & RABIES

At 12 months & Annually: DHLPP (sometimes call 7 in 1 0r 3 in 1)

At 12 months: Rabies

At 3 year intervals: Rabies

I have always micro chipped my dogs which is approx $35. & I have always paid for a license approx. $16. if neutered or spayed.

Toys Jonah has never been a chewer but Walmart or Petco clearance always has reasonable prices.

I think ur biggest investment will be a good brush, comb & matt spray.

Jonah luvs his walks & the small dog park no amount of toys can replace these items. His favorite play item are an empty toliet paper roll & empty water bottle which I put in an empty stuffed toy (I added velcro to bottom to seal bottle in) so nothing is swallowed & a sponge filled water frizbee which he luvs to catch $1.59.

Enjoy ur new puppy send us pictures.

Totally Reasonable
by: Hubble's Mom

So glad you're considering a Coton - you won't regret it! I get back so much more than my little guy could EVER cost me, seriously. Practically, raising a Coton doesn't cost any more than you would spend on another breed. We decided to have him groomed professionally from the start (after having groomed our Bichon ourselves for 12 yrs.) - runs about $50 every 5-6 weeks, but you could (a) do it yourself or (b) space it out longer. We have fed him speciality dog food since the start and it runs us a bit more, but not much and he is much healthier as a result. We did puppy training early on, again relatively inexpensive. And yep, toys - we keep him in balls for about $5/month.

coton expenses
by: sherry cotton candie

Congrats on your consideration of a coton puppy. They are such a wonderful breed. They do however require a lot of time and love. As with any dog keeping up to date on shots heartguard protection and flea protection can get pricey........Also some type of grooming expense. I keep mine long which does require daily brushing but I love grooming her. She freaks out at the groomers and has been nicked so I trim her face and foot pads myself. Otherwise her hair is long. If you do not want to do that yourself be sure and take your little pup to the groomers early so they get used to it.

Other than the grooming expense they require only what any other dog would. Initial cost is high but they are soooo worth it. I have had dogs all my life, large and small but these little cotons are so very special. They DO require a lot of attention and love, not a breed to be left alone for long periods of time or left outside.

They love going with you places and really need to be socialized early so they are good with other animals as well as people. We wish you good luck and please let us know when and if you get one. For the most part they are a loving - friendly breed and will adapt very easily in any home. They require just a little exercise and have a rather calm laid back attitude.

Will also mention they are very finicky eaters and against the advice of our breeder I fed mine table food. Big mistake! I wish I would have listened - but this is a personal decision you can make. I just wanted to give you a heads up on this as I had always given my others table food and they would still eat their own. My little girls think they are human and from reading about others it seems they all are about the same.

Again good luck and hope to see a pic of your new pup if you do get one.

Becca, we've had Alex now for 3 years and he hasn't cost us anything specific to the breed. Of course, you'll need to make sure that your Coton is fully up to date on shots, invest in a good comb :-) and be prepared to buy toys as they will get chewed up fast! But more than anything, be prepared for an energetic fluff of love! This really is a lovable, funny breed.
