Coton in NYC?

I live in NYC and am considering a Coton as a potential pet companion. How realistic is this choice re: keeping the hair clean and white in a city as big as NY? Thank you

NYC dog NEW
by: Anonymous

I live in a high rise apt in Manhattan. Have no problem keeping Ella white. Their hair naturally allows dirt to brush out. We dip her paws in warm water in kitchen sink when we come inside. Vet suggested it because of bacteria in the sidewalks here. Baby wipes (unscented) work well too. Although Ella is 7yrs old and just made the move from a lake home in IN to a high rise in NYC we were able to train her to potty on a Pee pad on the shower floor. She goes outside during the day but on the pee pad at night. Makes life SO MUCH EASIER than taking elevator to streets in middle of night.

Enjoy your new dog, whatever the breed. Good habits like paw cleaning, brushing and training cross many breeds.

I live in the city with a white Coton. It is a challenge to keep him white at all times, but it can be done with great shampoo products and training them to let you wipe their paws when they come in. Brushing them out keeps the stains from setting in.

Coton in NYC
by: Vicky & Jonah

No matter where your Coton lives he will get dirty as w/ any other dog. Dogs just do. By getting the color black where u do not see the dirt they are still dirty & faithfully need cleaned as w/any other color. They r an easy to care for & train breed in any environment.

Sure! Go for it!
by: Leslie

I live in Oakland Ca on the 20th floor in a high rise building in the downtown area. When I adopted Jasper his paws and lower legs were stained creme. The agency had washed him for sure and when I got him his fur lightened up with grooming and in between wash and blow dries To keep his puppy cut he gets the professional groom every 5-6 weeks. He smells so good when you wash him in between. Your pup will get lots of compliments with all of the people you walk past in a big city. Also Jasper wears a rain blanket and sweaters well when it is cooler and windy.
My building is a very dog friendly building so there are dogs everywhere so that helps. I say go for it !

Keeping Puppy Clean
by: Anonymous

I live on Long Island. My puppy keeps his white body clean. His paws get dirty and I use wipes to bring them back to white. It's going to be a challenge in the city but that shouldn't hold you back from getting a Coton. Only a black dog won't show any dirt. I am so in love with my boy and if he isn't always perfectly clean that's fine by me but I do try to keep up with it.
