Coton pumps front paws up and down and seems stuck

by Phil
(Kentucky)

My 11 year old Coton has started something new. While in a sitting position, she lifts each paw up and down and appears to be stuck. When I call out her name, she gets up and runs to me. It is rather bizarre. This "paw pumping" is becoming quite frequent and is progressing exponentially.

Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this neurological function?
Thanks much.

Actions not breed specific NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

On twitter is their a link @dogsgossip that may help. I am not on FB butit might b on their also.

Sometimes actions r not breed specific so by reaching out to local agility or obedience clubs in ur area may also return an answer as to where to move next. Most can b contacted via email by links they have on the web in ur area.

As a person who has had dogs in household even as a young girl the Coton is a wonderful breed but a lot of their dog habits & faults (separation anxiety) run in line w/numerous others breeds.

This is a wonderful site which I have participated in for going on 5.5 yrs. Yet some ailments in pets r just that. Hopefully by reaching out further then this site u will find an answer to the situation or reason for the current action.

I read pretty much thru my old "Home Veterinarian Book" but could not find a close match to even a type of bug that might cause this action. But if ur dog is doing it their must b another out their that has faced this.

I have studied dogs for a long time & thanks 2 Bing & Google many answers I have found. My thoughts & prayers r with u as pursue this challenge. I will continue to keep my eyes open & ques. dog owners I come in contact with that may have heard of this.

If u think that rewriting the desc. of the actions might help I will repost on agility website in my area & will keep ur post in my inbox. Good luck.

It's Getting Worse NEW
by: Phil

Unfortunately, our Coton's circle and paw behavior has progressed exponentially. The Vetennarian only had suppositions and vague hypothesis to explain the "action." I am hoping some Coton owner on this Forum recognizes these symptoms and has some answer to this disturbing mystery. Thanks

She also turns in a circle NEW
by: Phil

Weirdly, my wife pointed out she turns in a circle while doing this, perhaps rubbing her butt on the floor while lifting her paws. It is just very strange and we are just wondering if any other Coton owners have experienced this.

Paw pump NEW
by: Linda

My dog Molly does something similar which I wonder might be the same thing. You said she does both at the same time? Molly is sitting and raises one paw in the air and then bends the paw down as if she is waiving. So it isn't as if it is stuck. She does this with either leg.

Go Visit a Vet NEW
by: Mitch Tuckness

Have the dog a physical. It might be neurological or something. All dogs get quirks, but when they get older they can have issues as well.

Maybe it's just stretching?

Moriarty will stand up and then stretch all the way forward as far as he can, then he does the same thing backwards, just like people do when they stretch.

I would rule out any age related issues, at 11 years old you might consider giving them glucosemean for joints or maybe even have blood work done to see if she has arthritis?

My fathers Springer did for the last few years of his life, he got both the glucosemean and arthritis medication daily.
