Do all cotons walk on hind legs

by Nancy

My Coton is 6 months old and I was wondering at what age they walk on hind legs. Or, is this not typical of all Cotons?

Typical behavior to walk on back legs NEW
by: Truffles Mom

As Cotons were raised with the ring tailed lemur I am guessing this is a habit they learned (the breed) therefore it is an innate behavior. My Truffles will turn in a circle (Pretty Boy Dance) or hop like a bunny forward to me (Walk to Me). He also just gets up on those back legs to try to see what’s going on up on the kitchen counter when he smells something he likes. This is a wonderful neat trait that melts me each time.

I can’t see to get him to “Beg” though…. He either sits or stands.

Walking Cotons NEW
by: Kathy

My Toby has always done it.

Cotons have a "low center of gravity" and short, but strong legs. Toby has always jumped very high, sat up "pretty" for long periods of time (like when I'm eating and he's trying to get my attention).

He's very "food driven" and walks across the floor on his hind legs to see what's on the kitchen counter, table, or--when I'm standing straight up and offering him a treat.

I don't think it's a question of whether "all" Cotons are capable of "walking"....it's a question of preference. I believe they're all capable..but whether or not they do, depends on their preference and/or their need to.

Dancing dogs NEW
by: Moonpie

When we got Bill at 5 months, he did it right away. My mom was alive and living with us then and her physical therapist commented on it and said, "Oh you have one of those dancing dogs" He mentioned another lady that had them in town. We have met and become close friends.
Bill does it when he wants something or is very excited. He bounces forward and back and when he really wants something he puts his front paws together while doing and moves them in a swimming motion! I had wondered too if other Coton's danced.

Sophie will "sit pretty" on her hind legs for a treat, but she doesn't walk that way. She is almost 5 years old.

Lazy Coton... Beamer only walks for treats
by: Sandi Brown

Beamer is so laid back, he doesn't voluntarily walk, however for the right treat he will take a few steps. I actually managed to video tape his first steps...

walk on hind legs
by: sherry cotton candie

We got ours at 5 months and she would always walk when excited or wanting our attention. I assumed they all did the same. Sadly she gets everything handed to her anymore and we do not encourage her to do this.

Do you hold treats or toys high enough that she needs to stretch up to get them? ......Cotton does do this whenever I get her collar out because she knows she is going in the car. I love it and should encourage it more often.

They are such a fun breed--let us know how yours is doing?
