In shock to lose his heavy coat even in the summer
Physically sick
I'd recommend never shaving
Cut shorter Puppy cut
But never ever shave
And yes If your coton has markings Such as black ears etc
After shaving The color which is a recessive gene will most likely be gone !!
The cute doggie shown shaved in this site .... I'm wondering if he's actually a coton his Head shape Ear attachment (too high on the head) and body length would lead me to believe he's not a coton
Bishon maybe ???

BB/CC shavedNEW by: Iris
Dear BB you look a little like Tuffy did the first time he was shaved. I didn't know he was my dog. He had been aware of his long hair and was not a happy camper, neither of us were, he wouldn't even look at me that day. It was pitiful. There are before and after pictures I posted at the time, he used to be muticolored with silky hair that parted down the middle and swept the floor. I did know his hair was busily matting up all the time I was brushing the outer coat of hair. After he was shaved down the hair grew back all white except for grey on the ears. His hair was now thicker still fluffy but also wavy.I was new to the Coton breed, and didn't know about puppy coat, then adult coat. I've had Tuffy since he was 4 weeks old and now is 7 1/2 years and I'm still learning .
Glad for cotondetulear.com.thanks.

dog matting magic? by: Micki
Thanks everyone for the cowboy magic advice. I've never heard of it but I can't wait to try it. I like to keep my coton de tulear's coat long because she just looks so cute, but matting has definitely been a challenge. I'll let you know how it works.

Still a Cutie by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)
A breeder once told me that up until 13 mo. the puppy hair can be difficult.
Cowboy Magic is still the best I have found to use a couple of days before bath time by brushing it in then combing later all the cotton balls out. I also use at times while still wet after bath before I comb.
CMagic will tend to collect dirt like a magnet no matter how u use it. I also used to rub it into the mats to loosen to try & comb but found that cutting them carefully was much easier on Jonah to remain happy with grooming.
I have found that it is a must once done with their bath to comb out with a wide dog comb while wet. I then blow dry.
That same day or the next comb again using a reg. dog comb. Not the flea comb. Using a brush will not take care of the close mats. Do not wait any longer or mats get worse.
I use a blunt pair of shears to cut up vertically thru the matt or thinning shears to cut horizonally if I feel I might pull his hair in anyway while combing. Once the mat hangs at the top snip it off.
I also have found that Johnsons(baby) no more tangles works well after the bath to help comb out or to just freshen up his coat. I have tried the Petco whiteing conditioning spray while combing wet after bath.
I have found that once Jonah dries it creates a stiffness that makes it harder the next time u attempt to comb or brush thru the coat. It does make them look fluffy thou. I do like the Petco whiteing cond. shampoo.
The corner of his eyes I carefully use my thinning shears to trim the hair. Just enough hair to run a flea comb thru it every day to clean away the sleep. If the hair is to long I find it seems to pull & I think might hurt.
I also trim his bangs so I can see his eyes. I use Coton pictures to copy. I have let it grow long but it hangs in his face unless I tie it up.
I am in no way an expert. I like his coat semi long. It is a hard coat to master. I also have the time to comb or I would work with the puppy cut.
I hope by sharing my mistakes it may help. I have thought about ur post for some two wks. what success & failures I have run into.
I am open to any suggestions of products that anyone has found successful or any that u have tried & not had success with. I am in no way trying to bad mouth any product. This is a learning experience for me.
I do understand that a Coton may have diff. coat types & Jonah's is more on the fuzzy side especially toward his back end close to his tail. Also our weather tends to be dry & warm yr. round.
I like leave in produts after bath since they seen easier. I have heard of a product called Fur Butter that u rinse out if anyone has tried?
I have gone on groomers websites to read what they say. It appears that many do not care to work on Cotons. There main complaint seems to be mats.
This is a dog that must be combed out once a week(time varies) with daily brushing(5 min.)

Still a cutie pie! by: Dee
awe... BB, i know how you feel. but you are still as cute as ever.
Spanky has had a puppy cut on occasion just for that reason. Hard even though brushing is maintained, to keep the matts out. But, they are still beautiful in the long run. Spanky is now 9 months old. We love him so!

My Cotton's hair matted up also. by: Suzan
Especially when she had her puppy coat I was always brushing her especially behind the ears and tail that matted the most. I was glad when I took her for her first grooming when she was 8months old I had the groomer give her a puppy cut which a is much isn't to keep up and I don't worry about matted hair anymore. BB shaved by: Iris Miller
Aw, BB, you are still beautiful. Such a sweet boy. Tuffy is three+yrs. and has been shaved three times because of the matting. I used the metal comb and brushes and feel for matts every day but he still gets matted, so as soon as I find one I comb and cut it out. Brushing alone will not keep the matts from forming at the root of the hair, use the comb too. Good luck. Iris and Tuffy.
Nearly three years ago we lost our little Coton named Keeva. She had kept us on our toes for 10 years. My husband and I, in our 70’s, were devastated and
Louie is just over 3 months old. When I get him outside for a walk and to get him potty trained, he tends to pick things up to chew. Because he's so close
