Does anyone have a Coton de Tulear who hates driving in the car?.

My Coton de Tulear is almost a year old and has been on several long distance car rides and always cries and shakes for about the first 30 minutes before settling down. Even just going for short drives he shakes and cries every time.

TRISCUIT AND THE CAR
by: kathy

YESTERDAY WHEN I TOOK TRISCUIT TO THE GROOMER,,(NO, I HAVEN'T HAD THE COURAGE TO TRY AND DO IT MYSELF YET)...I HELD HER AND SHE SHOOK AND CRIED THE ENTIRE 40 MINUTE TRIP....BUT, ON THE WAY BACK, I PUT HER IN HER SOFT CAGE, AND SHE WAS AS QUIET AS A MOUSE. I LOOKED BACK AT HER A FEW TIMES, AND SHE WAS LOOKING AT ME WITH THOSE INCREDIBLE CUTE EYES)...BUT SHE WAS QUIET AND I THINK SHE FELT SAFE. WHAT A BREAKTHROUGH.....
BY THE WAY, THE GROOMER FORGOT TO PUT OUR NAME DOWN, SO THE TRIP WAS FOR NOTHING AND I HAD TO RESCHEDULE...NOW THAT IS YET ANOTHER REASON WHY I WANT TO GROOM HER MYSELF!!!!!!

TRISCUIT SHAKES AND CRIES WHEN SHE IS TAKEN IN THE CAR EVEN IF I HOLD HER. I BOUGHT A SOFT CARRIER THAT I PUT HER IN AND PUT ON THE FRONT SEAT NEXT TO ME IF I AM DRIVING. SHE STILL CRIES . I WILL TAKE HER FOR FREQUENT SHORT TRIPS IN HOPES THAT IT WILL HELP./ I WANT TO TAKE HER TO VISIT IN CT. WHEN I GO, BUT SHE SURELY ISN'T READY NOW. I ALSO HAVE A LARGE BROWN LAB, AND SHE IS A TERRIBLE RIDER ALSO////MAYBE IT IS MY DRIVING??

car rides and motion sickeness
by: Anonymous

When we picked up our puppy at about 12 weeks we had a 2hours car ride and he did throw up about 6 times on the way home. Maybe this is the reason that he still does not like riding in the car. He has not had any bouts of car sickness since that day he just cries and shakes. The vet did say to give him childrens gravol for motion sickness if he needs it which thankfully he has not.

Car rides
by: Sherry

My little Cinderella is 11 months old. She flew up to Alaska from a breeder in Missouri last August. When I picked her up at the airport, she was a mess, covered in what I thought was urine. But, it turns out that it was drool....lots of drool. Every time we go for a car ride, even a short one, she cries for a few mintues. When she is done crying, I know she has thrown up. I haven't noticed her shaking, so I think she just has motion sickness. I want to get her used to riding in the car, but I don't want her to have to endure that stress, so she doesn't get to go out much. :( I got some new medicine from the vet for motion sickness but I haven't tried it yet. It is expensive and you have to give it to them at least 2 hours before you go. It would only be good to try for a long trip.

I also have 2 toy poodles that ride in the car just fine. It sounds like the Coton has some kind of genetic dislike to motion.

I'm looking forward to this summer and trying to get her out of the house more, but I think we will be walking! Good luck with yours!

Daisy has gotten used to it
by: kathyswims

I used to live about 800 miles from my mom. I would drive to visit a couple of times each year. I have an older dog (part lab, part cocker spaniel) and a Coton. Daisy, the coton, threw up the first trip in the car and one other time on a really curvy road. Neither of the dogs likes riding in my convertible with the top down but have gotten used to the routine of riding in the car and look forward to going. I only drive with the convertible top down around town when the dogs are with me. Daisy sometimes trembles and shakes. Sometimes I let her lay in my lap while I drive, but usually she sits either in the passenger seat or the back.

Car rides
by: Iris Miller

I think I posted a while back about Tuffy and car rides. We started out very young putting his soft carrier in the back seat and he was fine with it, he feels very secure in his "cave". Then the little escape artist figured a way to unzip it from inside, and open the velcro flap and climb out! After that, we still put him in it but left the front open so he could look around. He now rides in the back seat only, no carrier, and he whines and whimpers only if he needs to go potty, so I try to make him go before we get in the car.He got the hang of it, and knows that's the routine. For some reason, he used to cry when the signal indicator was on, and sometimes the radio. I think he is hearing higher pitched frequencies out of my hearing range, and it bothers him. He also senses if we are going to the Vet or anyplace unpleasant and will cry all the way.The only time Tuffy threw up in the car was when he was a few months old and I, on that rare occasion held him in my arms because I was a passenger, my son was driving.Tuffy threw up all over my new sweater. My son laughed hysterically. I learned a lesson that day, no more riding shotgun for Tuffy!

traveling with two cotons
by: Laura

I have two 8 yr old cotons. Gracie loves traveling in the RV...looks out the window or sleeps...my other one, Lizzie, shakes and I have to hold her the WHOLE trip....sometimes she relaxes, but not often. Very different personalities. Lizzie used to throw up, but she stopped that years ago....funny little dogs.
