Extreme dog humping

by Jennifer

I have 2 male Cotons, 2 yrs old, from the same litter. One will not stop humping my cats. He goes through spurts where he will be so excited, he shakes and can not do anything but focus on the cats, and then all of a sudden he'll be fine.

We try putting the cats in a room, but he will scratch at the door or bark, same if we put him in his kennel. We were going to get him neutered, but he had elevated liver enzymes and the vet was not comfortable putting him under anesthesia. I am at a loss.

humper
by: Iris Miller

I also believe it is an act of dominance a frustration or boredom relief.Tuffy was neutered at four months. He would occasionally hump a velvet floor pillow until one day we went shopping at a feed and pet supply store where he spotted a stuffed toy hedgehog almost as big as him. Tuffy pulled the toy off the hook on the wall and headed with it in his teeth for the door. He had chosen a bride, a lifelong mate. We named her humper. Tuffy plays with humper,we play tug with her,Tuffy throws her around,he captures and humps then he's done with her for the time being.I ignore it. We make sure those trigger toys are put up out of sight when it is inappropriate or if he is over doing it. When other dogs have attempted this behavior toward my dog I distracted them, removed my dog.

female humping
by: Della

Well, I guess it must be a sign of dominance, because I have a male and female Coton and it's the female that had the humping behavior. She is definitely the most dominant of the two dogs. She's been much better now that she's older and is better trained. It was kind of embarrassing for a while. Hang in there and just make sure you train him. What worked for us was distracting her with something else whenever she started humping and rewarding her when she stopped.

Is this Coton the alpha dog?
by: Anonymous

Getting neutered will definitely help, but some dogs exhibit this behavior as a show of dominance. You can change that with training.

Cat humping
by: Louise C

My coton is 3 and neutered and will not leave my elderly cat alone. Vet has been useless to help. I had to send my other older kitty to live with my sister because of this behavior. :(....
