Housetraining

Is it possible to train a coton puppy to eliminate outside during the day and at night to eliminate inside on the UgoDog (or if you are not familiar with UgoDog, pee pads). I have read in general about dogs one person said in an article on housebreaking don't train for both since it will only confuse the dog. Other places I thought some people were able to train their dogs to use both UgoDog (or pee pads) as well as outside.

I would like for the puppy to be trained that it's whole life he could use the UgoDog at night or if we are away and he has to go and outside in the day. In my mind, it would be a permanent thing, not just until he can learn to go outside. I tried to train our senior coton to use it inside but since he was old and so well trained to go outside, he would have none of it.

Am I dreaming or is this a do-able thing that the puppy could be trained for as a permanent option.

Have had success NEW

Hi there

I have managed to use pee pads for when I am away for lengths of time. Alot of the times he doesnt use though until I get home. I take him out during day times and put pad down at night. Hes a good boy and only uses pad at night if he needs it. I am hard of hearing, so would not hear him anyway if he barked to go out at night. So pee pads work well. I would not like him to hold his bladder that long during nights.

PEE PADS NEW

Mine will also use the pee pads if left for extended period of time. I love them as I do not think it is healthy for a dog to have to hold it for hours......They will not use them when I am home though and at times during storms or etc. it would be good if they would.

Cotons are very clever and I made the mistake of changing their pee pad place-----my one (a rescue) will still go there and use the throw rug so if possible decide on a permanent place and leave it alone. I know some will follow the pad anywhere, she did not!

Good luck with yours!! They are such a wonderful and loving dog.

Best of both worlds NEW

Luc is also trained to go outside as well as inside on pee pads. I can't take credit for it though since he was already trained on the pads when I got him.

I can't tell you how many times it's come in handy, especially when there's bad weather or I get unexpectedly hung up at work.

Good luck.

Definitely possible! NEW

Hello,
I trained my Coton to eliminate indoors and outdoors. It was extremely easy. This training started from the very beginning when she came home as a puppy.
My girl had no confusion. She is now three years old. She has good bladder control, so rarely needs to use the pee pads now. She prefers to go outside and I do take her outdoors regularly, when I am home.
But, if I have to be away from home for a long period, she will use the pee pad, if necessary.
These Coton's are very smart, they learn quickly and generally, easily.
Good luck to you.
If you need further suggestions, I would gladly tell you how I trained Bailey. But, not all of dogs are the same and what works for one may not work for another.
I have never regretted my decision to train Bailey indoors and outdoors.

indoor outdoor training

My dog I'd trained for both, and he does prefer to mark his territory outside, but will go on the pads if I can't take him out. He understands PEE ON THE PAPER. GOOD BOY.. I have the plastic tray with a wide cotton throw rug below to capture wet footprints the pee pads sit on the tray and are clipped securely in.
I bought two of these trays at Petsmart. Tuffy will not poop in the house and will hold it until it's an emergency and only then use the pee pad. When he pees on the pee pads he barks once and runs to tell me to go see. Then he gets praise and a small treat.i immediately remove the soiled pad and replace it with a clean one.
I've posted previously when I was injured and had surgery and had to retrain tuffy on the pads because I couldn't take him out. I put the pee tray close to an outside door (Not where he eats,as far from his food as possible and as close to outdoor as possible. He still loves a walk and a go pee poop outdoors.its not confusing. My dog has separation anxiety. Generally speaking most Cotons are social and don't like to be alone. If I have to go out for a couple of hours some evenings he will hold it until I get home and take him outside to calm down and only then he will go pee.

Yes but u need to leave the Ugo down all the time. Let them get use to using it anytime. If you go out side during day & they potty say good so they know that's ok. If they walk back in the house & go tell them good & that's ok. As they get older 1 + yrs they will get that both r ok. This will also help if you travel & need to use a pad in a hotel room.

If you pick up the ugo & try to teach times they can use it, it will backfire on you. U need to instill that both behaviors r alright at any time. This way when they see it down as they get older 1+yrs it will come naturally to use.

They instinctively learn to potty outside when they go out but when you see it let them know this is also wonderful behavior. Praise, praise, praise.
