Bully Sticks
by: Anonymous

I give my Coton bully sticks to chew (aka pizzles). When my dog acts like he's getting bored and before he can get into any "trouble", I give him a stick to chew on for a few hours. That usually will satisfy his need to chew.

PS. Long walks & dog parks help to tire them out as to not have as much time to get into trouble.

Another thing to try is deodorant. I heard it on Animal Planet last yr but Jonah was past the stage. It was on the half hr. Foster & Smith program. Where deodorant works the same as Bitter Apple which does work I have used it for my Silky's yrs. ago but u do have to test 1st. since it can dull the finishes.

I know it can be hard when not home all the time & I am a firm believer in crate training. But while home every time u catch them give correct the behavior & give them what they are allowed to chew on since it is a stage they go through.

All have their opionion but I believe that until almost 3 yrs most dogs big or small are still furry little kids that need someone to help guide them on what they can & cannot get into. While it takes more time & patience in the beginning it pays off 10 times over when they get older.

Jonah hit his teenage stage I call it when he tested everything at about 1.5 yrs. & yes it can be very funny thou u try not to laugh in front of them. Good luck I know child proofing takes time but is worth it in the long run. U still have ur things & also peace of mind. :-)

My chewing thief
by: Anonymous

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one with a "chewer". He's also a "thief" and likes taking things out of closets, suitcases, etc. I thought for a while that he was mostly just taking things for fun ... and then he figured out that he could EAT them. So far, he's ruined 2 pairs of shoes, a rocker, and an afghan, plus some lesser things. He loves to steal my socks, shoes, and slacks best of all. I try to keep things where he can't get them, but he's always on the lookout for a new treasure. He's so cute when he steals stuff that it lessens the anger I should feel. I put liquid soap on the rocker and it stopped his chewing of that.

Shoes

Bitter Apple is good but do a test on ur shoes in case it dulls them. Unless u are their to supervise & correct the behavior w/a sharp AH! AH! or NO hide ur shoes or keep them up out of the way.

As they say out of sight out of mind. If he forgets how much fun it is the behavior will go away. Then one day u will realize he does not touch them at all.

U also will not have the stress & frustration over losing a pair of ur favorite shoes & not get upset w/ur puppy. It's just like child proofing.
