How do we remove coton de tulear from our bedroom?

by Slee
(Denmark)

Frida is 15 weeks - a very happy and outgoing puppy. She's been socializing with me from the very beginning and is always happy to see all kinds of different people, dogs, riding in the car or bus. Overall, she's very mild at heart and always wants to play.

When we got her at 8 weeks, she slept in her doggy bed beside our bed, getting her to sleep with our hand in her crate. So over the weeks I've been moving her bed longer and longer away from our bed, because we'd like eventually to be able to shut the bedroom door and let her sleep in the living room. We miss our privacy :)

So now I've separated the bedroom from the living room with a small fence. She can still see us and her bed is just on the other side.

So normally it's not a problem if I pat the bed telling her: "Here Frida, blanket, good night". If she's tired she'll go in at once and sleep, if she's not, she starts whining, growling, and eventually barking until I put my hand out and I can get her to sleep and calm down.

My question is, we'd really like her to be able to sleep in her own bed in the living room with a closed door (the door is not closed now). How is the best way to reach this goal where we're at now?

I really hope you can help!

Use Fabric Sheets for Coat Static
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

Jonah is 4 1/2 & will lay outside during a storm if I let him. I do not know if it is a breed trait or because I rub a fabric sheet on his coat to prevent the static build up. I saw it on Animal Planet. They said it works the same as the storm coats they sell for dogs.

I wish I would of thought about this 20 yrs ago for my Silky's since they would hide behind my apartment size stackable washer dryer during monsoon season. Before work I would even try to block off the area & they wold climb the gate or obstacles I put up. Funny now but not then trying to get them out.

In the winter time here it is very dry & I have a micro blanket that I use to snuggle. With the cotton coat it stands up from the blanket. I have sprayed a little static guard on Jonah & then on the blanket to curb the effect. Not that I am suggesting it just works for me.

Coton's and the Bed
by: Jolie LaFleur's mom, Tammy

I am no help either, but I still wanted to share!! Jolie, my Coton and Brutus, my Chihuahua both sleep with us in the bed. We started it with Brutus because he is a recue and almost everything still scares him, even though we have had him for 10 years now!! Bad thunderstorms are the worst for him and being in bed wiwth us helps. He is also always cold, so he sleeps under the covers! Jolie usually sleeps curled up next to me, in the bend of my knees or at my stomach. And she sure can curl up into a very small ball, considering how long she is!! She really helps me out a lot though, because I have some hearing loss and someitmes do not hear the alarm to wake up for work. Both she and Brutus are very quiet and don't move much through the night (or day, as I work shift work, but when the alarm goes off, she gives puppy kisses and that helps me if I haven't heard the alarm. They are so very smart, they pick up things so quickly!!

1 in bed, 2 in crate
by: Kathy

With my first coton, I let her sleep in my bed with me. She doesn't like it when there are activities other than sleeping in the bed, so she crawls under the bed and gets on the bed only when the coast is clear. Six years now.

When I got two more puppies last summer, a friend gave me old crate she had used for her German Shepherd who she had lost a while back. She was happy to let me have the very large crate. I started crate training immediately at night. The crate is in my bedroom. As puppies they were quite cozy curled up together and now they at a year old, they can still stretch out. I also started a bedtime ritual. I say it's time to go to bed & they run to get into the crate (I give them a small treat but only if they are inside the crate). I don't do the treat every night, but most nights. They've never cried to get out -- in fact I think it's like a drug to them. They get inside, curl up and konk out.

In the daytime, all three dogs stay in the laundry room (approx 4 ft x 8 ft space with water and food) while I am at work.

Settle in
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

1st I would suggest a crate. Buy the size in consideration that this will be her safe zone for the rest of her life. Then find a place in ur house that is basically a quiet, cool, semi dark area in the day. Use this as the training area. While she is still a baby u can move it out side ur bedroom for now if u like.

Then go online & read crate training from a couple sites. Humane society has a good one also.
The reason I say crate is that as puppys grow out of site usually means trouble. By using a crate at night ur puppy will be safe & so will anything laying around that u like.

Leave the door open during the day so ur pup can enter to nap or rest. Crate to go to store. If they don't know what fun it is to chew shoes or such then as adults it never happens.

Eventully & u will know when its time u will not need to shut the door & they will use it still as as their safe zone. Say to get aways from to many kids at a kids party, fireworks etc.

Remember for a night they do not need water or chew bones they may choke on. But the crate has to be big enough for them to stretch out as they grow. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I agree. These are people puppies and thrive on the closeness. We would not be able to sleep knowing he was in the next room. He is very discreet when we need our 'privacy'. Morning puppy kisses are delicious.

bedroom coton's
by: SHERRY - COTTON

Sorry -- we are also guilty of letting our Cotton sleep with us. Sometimes we can throw the covers over her and she will get too warm and jump off into the bathroom tile or rarely her own bed. I love feeling her little feet on my leg or back, she will kick like a horse to get enough room. It is scary at times, we have to check out where she is before we can move enough to get up. I never slept with my human babies but this one seems to be the boss. Guess old age mellows us. I agree if you just ignored her cries for a few nights the problem would be solved, we just do not mind her being with us. Whatever you decide - good luck. Have to love these little dogs.

Be firm
by: Bette

The problem is that you keep giving in so she knows if she whines loud or long enough you will give her what she wants. You have to be firm and consistent and just close the door. Yes, you will probably lose a couple of nights sleep, but then after that she will understand that her crying won't get her what she wants and she'll stop.

She just has to unlearn this habit which usually only takes a couple of days. My advice is DON'T GIVE IN - if you do, it will only confuse her and take longer for her to understand what you are asking her to do. This is the same no matter what behavior you are trying to teach your dog.

Sorry to say, but I'm asking for someone who can help me with my request, I'm aware that many coton owners let their dog in their bed...

Sleeping arrangements
by: Kathy

Must be a trend. Our two Cotons sleep in bed with us and are great sleepers. We live having them with us. We find "privacy" at other times.

No help coming from me. Our two cotons started at in crates at night, then one got sick and they ended up in our bed and have been for 7 years. We love it, they love it. It is so great to wake up to doggy kisses everyday. one between us, one on our feet, both in our hearts.
