How do you blow dry your Coton de Tulear?

by Connie
(England)

Hello again,

All is great until Connie needs drying. Whilst she is a puppy she can air dry but we need advice on blow drying. A domestic hair dryer seems too loud and she backs away, although when switched off, or a short distance away, she is fine. She has been dried at the groomers and tolerated the experience.

So my question is, what type of dryer do others use? Do we need a professional brushless motor/silent dryer, or are there alternatives that other Coton owners use, with relative success?

Thanks for help so far.

Your comments are very helpful, although it is clear that each and every one of our wonderful Cotons on both sides of the Atlantic have a very individual set of tolerances and personalities.

BLOW DRYING
by: KATHY AND TRISCUIT

TRISCUIT LOVES TO BE BLOWN DRY WITH MY OWN HAIR DRYER...I MAKE SURE THAT IT IS FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM HER AND KEEP IT MOVING ALL OVER HER. SHE DOESN'T MIND THE NOISE AT ALL....ALTHO EVERYTHING ELSE FREAKS HER OUT.

Baby loves blow dryer
by: Lulu's. Mum

Lulu actually now enjoys our hand held blow dryer. She sticks her rump in the air at it too and rolls around on floor while being dried. I use towels first like most but we Arvin winter months here and don't wish to have her outside with any dampness. I brush her each night and comb out tangles so I guess over time she has become accustom to all the fussing.

Blow dry
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

I just use my blow dryer on Jonah on low. I do wrap towells around him till as dry as I can get him. If it is warm out I will let him air dry then at the end use the dryer for fluff. During our winter since it is chilly I blow dry all the way on low. Starting out he was a little scared. I think it is something they just get used to. He would sit beside me when I would blow dry my hair & I would blow air on him & pet & go back to my hair. It is something that needs to be done if the weather is chilly & they learn to accept it. Good luck & treats help starting out so they look at it as a good thing.

drying your Coton
by: Iris Miller

I use the sham wow chamois cloth, it is very absorbent. As soon as I am done bathing Tuffy I wrap it around him and gently squeeze his hair all over with the sham cloth, then wrap him in a large thick bath towel then fluff him with the towel. I only turn my hair dryer on low at him for only a minute as I continue to fluff his hair. Tuffy does not like the dryer, and when he was at the groomers he was trapped in a wire crate with the dryer blowing on him and no way out.(another reason we don't go there any more). it is not the air blowing that bothers him, but with his super sensitive hearing I am sure it is the high pitch screaming sounds of the motor besides the whine, that we are unable to hear that makes him nervous. I let him run around and "fight" the towel he grabs the end tugs and shakes it. Tuffy usually curls up for a nap after the exhausting bath time. I don't comb his hair until it is absolutely dry.

BLOW DRYING
by: SHERRY - COTTON

IS IT NECESSARY THAT YOU USE THE BLOW DRYER??? I TOWEL DRY COTTON FOR A FEW MINUTES, THEN WRAP AND HOLD HER FOR A FEW MINUTES IN ANOTHER DRY TOWEL. IN NO TIME AT ALL SHE IS DRY, I BRUSH HER OUT SMALL AREAS AT A TIME WHILE SHE IS WRAPPED UP. SHE LOVES ALL THE ATTENTION AND IT DOES NOT UPSET HER. SHE JUST FREAKS OUT AT THE SOUND OF ANY DRYER.

WE ARE IN WARM CLIMATE SO SHE NEVER GETS CHILLED. THEIR HAIR REALLY DOES DRY QUICKLY. IT MAKES HER BATHTIME SO MUCH EASIER.
