How often can I bathe dog if I put oil in tub?

(1) I want to shower/bathe my dog as often as I possibly can, say, every other day, if not everyday. Is it possible to do it if I apply remedial treatments to keep its skin from drying out? What treatment can I give it?

(2) Also, can I cut its hair very short?

whoa! that's a lot of bathing~

Oil in bath water will exacerbate doggy smell. Bare body clips are pretty ugly, in my opinion, but you might like a puppy cut on your dog. Hang in there; they're super dogs. My three year old gets bathed every 2-3 months and my one year old has had one bath in his life, before a show. I comb them every day; they both have long hair. And they do mat if you don't keep up with the grooming!

Not every day, surely!
by: Connie

There are only a few books on grooming Cotons, until the other month. We've bought a book, for Connie, from http://www.cotongrooming.com/ and are very pleased with the guidance. Hope this helps.

No doggy odor, no bath needed
by: Iris Miller

The Coton has hair, not fur, and has a very pleasant odor, almost like perfume. Please read up on the breed as suggested, they are hypo-allergenic, do not shed or have dander, they will lose some hair, just as we humans do.I think you will have a serious skin problem with your dog if you over do the bathing.
My dog Tuffy has never had doggy odor, not even when wet from the rain.He always smells sweet.Tuffy's hair and skin tend to be dry because he lives and sleeps(right under the heater vent,by his choice) in the house, only going out for a walk or toilet. Brushing distributes the natural oils from their skin. If you brush and comb and spot clean, face, around eyes, butt, etc, he does not need a soaking or any shampoos or chemicals on his body.
By the way. Some dogs only get bathe twice a year.

Once a month is fine.

I concur w/all other comments. Never put oil in their bath it causes them to smell & does not work out well. Tried it once. LOL. U can thou give them a 1/2 teas. olive oil on their food every day & it promotes healthy skin & keeps their nails soft so when u trim them they are not brittle & split.

The main key to the bath is rinse, rinse, rinse. Also as others say I wash Jonah's face, feet, belly & brush teeth almost daily. By brushing or combing daily u also promote healthy skin & natural oils in their coats.

By googleing Coton de Tulear grooming I have found numerous articles that teach also ehow.com. Good luck

Bathing
by: Kirby's Mom

I think every day is way too often. Their skin can dry out easily. I bathe Kirby every 3 to 4 weeks, and make sure he gets a nice cream rinse after the shampoo so his skin doesn't get dry and itchy.

Bathing
by: Liz

Fifi is showered once a week (mainly to eradicate the doggy smell, combed every day. We find she can get absolutely filthy but it seems not to adhere to her hair and is clean a couple of hours later.
I had her groomed and hated it, asked for a 2inch cut all over, this was her first groom, she came back looking like a terrier, squared bodied, square ears and jaws, and I could see her skin on her back, we are still growing it back.

bath dog
by: Hoppy

Hello
My coton Jolie gets bathe on the first monday of every month by our groomer. This works for me & her. Now if for some reason she gets into something and need a bath I give her one. I comb, brush her every few days while doing so I spot clean her. Spot cleaning means hand wash her face, feet, do her eyes & behind. She spends 95% time indoors. The other 5% on lease with me outdoors. Well hope this my be of help it works for Jolie and me. We love each other sooooo much.

Dog's skin is much different than ours, there is no need to bathe them that much, and it dries the skin and makes them itchy.
