Is there a Coton de Tulear standard?

by Marty
(Texas)

At a recent dog event I met an owner that has a male fluffy Coton de Tulear. My female has long thin hair; not fluffy. She said her female was the same.. What is the standard?

My Coton's color change
by: Iris Miller

If you check back at the photos I have posted of Tuffy you will see his parents and him as a puppy. His mother and father were all white.Tuffy was born tri-color and when he became very matted at one year old he had to be completely shaved. You could see all the color spots on his skin, but when his hair grew back he was all white except for some grey hair on his ears and a few stray black hairs (see also current photos of Tuffy). His hair gets wavy when not brushed and straight and fluffy when brushed. He is four years old now, has been shaved three times(every summer for three years) because of matting, and he is still as cottony as ever. I am grooming him at home now so I cut the mats out as they occur (if they are too difficult to comb out)to avoid having him shaved again.
I let his hair grow for winter and keep it short in summer except for his tail, I leave the plume. Maybe he would not win a show contest but for sure he would win Mr. Personality! I have no doubt he is a Coton de Tulear, but no matter anyway, he is the love of my life.

coton standards
by: SHERRY-COTTON

If you get on the internet there is a lot of standards listed for the coton, color - conformation - height- weight etc. I was told my little girl is imperfect because she has a freckle size spot of tan on the hairline edge of her nose. No problem for me, like you I adore her no matter what. As for hair when she had her puppy coat it was so thick and almost impossible to keep brushed out, since she is now almost two, her hair has thinned out and is so easy with just a few minutes each am I can keep it mat free.

Cotons are just a beautiful little dog, the favorite standard seems to be all white with no other color. However, cotton has apricot on her ears and a couple spots on her back. To us she is gorgeous, looks are in the eyes of the beholder and we love her great devotion and happy antics. It is not important to us that she is not showable or cannot be bred, she is our baby and an important member of our family.

If you are interested in showing your little girl, you can check out the internet requirements, otherwise, like us you are blessed with a great companion who makes each day special. Good luck to you and your little girl.

Standard for Cotons
by: Anne/Glenmoore PA

I am not the one to comment on the standards but our Molly is tricolor (mostly white with black/grey ears and some apricot on her tail). She also has curlyish hair (bichon influence?) But it gets long and it's very cottony and thick. Her stature, size, plume tail all fit the descriptions I've seen. She is a beauty and her fun personality and brown penetrating eyes see into your soul. She is a winner no matter what she looks like.
