Logan's Finally Housetrained!

by Crystal Garland

I posted a while ago seeking advice with house training Logan. I'm proud to say that he's finally house trained!!!! I'm so happy and proud of him. When he has to go, he gets up and runs to the doggy door. I no longer have to follow him to make sure he goes out to do his business and not on my carpet! He's the cutest, happiest, and the most adorable loving dog I've ever owned. Thanks to everyone for the advice to not give up on the crate training.

Using the crate for potty training NEW
by: Crystal

It seemed like it took forever to house break Logan using the crate. I adopted him at 16 weeks and we're at the point now where I don't have to worry about him having any accidents in the house (he turns 1 in March). Purchase a crate that's just big enough for your dog to turn around and lie down in. It shouldn't be big enough for him to potty in (although I've heard of dogs doing just that). You have to stick to a schedule and take your dog out the same time every day. In the AM I would take Logan out and say "go potty" or "potty time". If he didn't have to go, he would go back in his crate for about an hour and we would go out again. I did this in the AM, after meals, and in the evening. Also, I removed the water dish around 7pm (after housebreaking, I stopped removing the dish). I installed a doggy door which Logan learned to use right away which helped. Logan loves his crate so I didn't have to worry about getting him in it. If your dog doesn't want to go in the crate, you can use food as a motivator. You can also place your dogs food dish at the opening of the crate, then gradually put the food dish inside the crate and leave the door open. Eventually, they will get use to it. Never use the crate as punishment. Make it a pleasant experience for them. Good luck!

Thank you! NEW
by: Anonymous

Thanks for the thank yous and for the nice comments! I thought we would never get to this point! He even knows when it's time for bed. His crate is located in my bedroom and he'll run and jump in to settle down for the night. When I'm sitting watching TV, he'll jump in my lap and nudge my hand. That's his way of telling me he wants a belly rub! He's so sweet!
