Metal chewing on leash

by Marcia
(Chicago)

My coton is 5 months old and constantly chews on the metal hook to her leash. How can I stop it. I have put that bitter stuff on and still does not work. It's driving me crazy. Any ideas?

Chewing metal clasp on leash NEW
by: Marcia

Thank you all. We got some bitter apple stuff and rubbed it directly on the leash and metal hook. Instead of for sorahing we saturated it. Seems to be working .

Have your little coton checked by the vet. Could be a lack of vitamins. Possibly iron.

Try unscented deodorant. Gel or stick is fine. rub it on the metal. It won't hurt them. He must b able to turn his head quite a bit to reach it w/a harness.

Jonah always starts out his walk by putting his leash in his mouth as if he's walking me, but drops it as soon as we get out front.

He has done this ever since he was a puppy but never chewed on the leash.

Good luck

You might try rubbing some vinegar on the metal.....mine will back far away whenever I get it around them......It won't hurt them to taste it but mine won't go near the smell.

My little girl went thru harness's and leash's like crazy when young.
we could never seem to catch her chewing but decided she had to do it while in her stroller. She did eventually stop--not sure if it was her age or us fussing at her for it.

Metal chewing on leash clasp NEW

Thank you ! However she is in a harness and it's not the metal on the harness it is the clasp on the leash that she gets to when we clip to the harness. Tried the stuff you rub on but to no avail. She is perfect otherwise and a joy. Perhaps she will outgrow it since she is teething . She is 5 mos. Has anyone else had this problem.?

Ideas to try to stop leash chewing. NEW
by: Anonymous

You could try using a harness instead of a collar and then the puppy wouldn't be able to reach the hook. Maybe they would outgrow the habit.
We had the same problem when we used a lightweight woven leash. When we switched to an all metal chain leash, she quit trying to chew on it. I also tried to keep the leash pulled taut keeping the collar turned so the hook was on the back of the neck. Eventually she quit trying and we could go back to the woven leash again.
Hope these ideas might be helpful.
