MY 7 YEAR OLD COTON CONTINUALLY POOPS AND PEES IN THE HOUSE, HOW DO I TRAIN HER NOT TO DO THIS

I rescued my dog a year ago. she is a sweet, affectionate dog. BUT the issue is that she is constantly pooping and peeing in the house. i have tried to get her to poop and pee before we go to bed but she does not. in the middle of the night she will pee and poop on my bedroom carpet and it continues and my carpet is looking awful with the stains. How can I train her? she is my first dog.

frustrated NEW
by: Anonymous

Our 8 month old is the same way. Sometimes she'll go to the doorwall or run up to us and whine to let us know she has to "go" and other times she'll just do her business right in front of me without making a sound. It's so frustrating. We've crated her, letting her out and only back in after "going", giving treats, etc. We are at our wits end.

I suggest walks
by: Pamela

We had the same issues with our 14 month old rescue. I was tearing my hair out. No matter how often we let him out he invariably did his business wherever in the house. Then I started taking him for a walk around the block with my Yorki e and, voila! He started peeing 4-5 times during the walk and would poop twice each time. That was his daily limit and the rest of the day I no longer had to worry about him. After about 6 weeks of this I guess he got so accustomed to doing his potty outside in our walks he also began doing it in the yard when we let him out. I still walk both my boys daily because it's good for us all but he no longer does his business in the house.

Messing in the house
by: Sharon and Jasmine

When Jasmine was a puppy I took her out every couple of hours when I was home. I worked so she was crated but I came home for lunch and would let her out. She trained very quickly. Never used pee pads. Now that she is 4, she can hold her pee quite a long time. She goes to bed at 11:00 pm, but I let her out before bed and we sleep until 10:00 am then out again. I always let her out after she eats to do her poo. The fact that your dog is older and a rescue might mean she was never trained and maybe that is why she is a rescue. Good luck. Just keep at it. Do you offer treats? Have you had a vet check her out?

2-1 yr old peeing and pooping
by: Anonymous

I have three Cotons. My newest Pups are a year old. They hold it if they are crated. I never leave them for more than 4 hours, I come back and let them out...great. the rest of the day they are on and off peeing on the floor. At night, I crate them at 9pm and they are fine till 5:30 a.m.
My vet says small dogs are hard to train...I agree.
I had seven Airedale Terriers before these pups, never, ever did they go in the house!!!

Peeing, Pooping in House
by: Anonymous

As much as I hate to use pee pads, which i have never used before, I do & they work quite well.

I have 3 Cotons & my vet told me that little dogs can not hold their urine, etc for the long hours that we are gone. I leave the house by 8am at least & dont return until 6:30pm on average. That is 10.5 hours. I use the bathroom during that time, so why I would think my 3 babies wouldnt have to is beyond me but I didnt. I use pee pads & try to put them in the same area all the time. As much as I hate to use them, it gives my girls a place to go that for the most part is successful.

It may not be for you, but it has worked the best for me. I dont have a fenced back yard & wouldnt want my dogs to be able to get out unattended as they are small, but we dont have a doggy door for them to go out & potty when we are not home. I hope this helps. Lita
