HAVE INSURANCE
by: Anonymous

I live in Ontario, and have pet insurance for my 9 year old Coton. It is through "Pet Care" insurance brokers. So far they have not refused a claim, but mostly this has been for wellness care, annual physical exams, vaccinations, etc. They are still giving me a hard time about the fact that I cannot get the vet who looked after her before I got her to send them history information. I will try one more time to get the info. She is coming up for a teeth cleaning and some other work, which they are supposed to pay $150 towards, and this is listed under wellness care. I have to pay first, and then get reimbursed. The cost could be up to $500 but even that much reimbursement will help.
Every year she gets older, the rate goes up, though. right now I am paying $76 monthly. I honestly dont know if I want to keep doing this.
I wont recoup what I have already contributed if I withdraw, and I really want it for when she gets older in case there are problems. The one thing she did have before I got her that was serious was never really diagnosed, but treated symtomatically, and they say things about illnesses with same symptoms even if not diagnosed not being covered, so I dont like that part.

We have pet insurance through the ASPCA. It's reasonable and they offer various plans. So far, so good.

Do your research
by: Gale

I agree that it's important to ask the right questions before selecting a pet insurance. I have been thinking about getting dog insurance for Luc since there's been so many expenses from his allergy treatments. But I know I have to make sure that pre-existing conditions are covered.

Other questions to ask BEFORE signing up:

  • What is covered and what specifically is not covered? Will drugs, lab work, X-rays, dental care, vaccines, holistic treatments, etc. be covered?

  • How much is the deductible?

  • Can you choose any vet you want?

  • Does your pet have to be a specific age in order to be covered?

If you are disciplined enough to put money aside for your dog's medical expenses that's fantastic. The Coton is pretty healthy overall, but what if your dog requires unexpected major surgery or requires long term care that can add up to thousands of dollars?

I too would love to hear your experiences with pet insurance.

Buyer Beware!

I am a vet tech and we see claim after claim being turned down by all of them. They either state its a breed specific inherited problem and not covered, pre existing , or not covered under policies. I had VIP insurance for 4 cats and my coton. I stopped it and started putting away the money I would pay monthly into a savings account. They refused to pay for my cats kidney failure care saying egyptian maus where known for kidney problems and should have known this. We have a client who's coton had to have both eyes removed at the age of 6 due to Glaucoma. The insurance company refused to pay. It was a $6000 dollar surgery. Please read the fine print and ask ALOT of questions.

What company did you choose? I am considering this for my 3yr old. I think he may have a bladder problem since he pees a lot and has been hard to potty train.
Thanks,
Betty

Pet Insurance

I got pet insurance for my coton. I talked to my vet and she recommended a company. Because cotons are generally in good health, I got coverage for emergencies only ex if he breaks a leg,x-rays etc... I think it is important because I have an older dog who needs meds and x-rays and is costing quite alot.
