Need dog food advice for rescued Coton

by Karen

9-14 I drove to St Louis to adopt a 2 yr old male coton who had been rescued from a puppy mill raid. He had been used as a stud. He was vet checked, immunized, neutralized. Bad shear job to get rid of mats and I have a grooming appt for him Thursday to fix what is left. I did bathe him Sunday as the 6 hour drive back was quite stinky and his remaining hair awful. He was very afraid for his bath. He is avoiding the bathroom in fact.

I have a Papillon I adopted from a rescue about a year and a half ago. He is also just over 2. My Gipper has allergies and is on DD food and treats. I am wondering if it will hurt Charlie Benoist to eat the same food as Gipper.

Charlie is so skinny and so hungry, while Gipper is picky and leisurely. The vet asst said ask the vet but it will be a while til I get in and I doubt she has any experience with a coton

resued Coton

Hills is a wonderful food u r ok there since they share same age. All Cotons that I have ever meet chew at their feet. kept the feet combed from jaggers & do not forget in between the toes because they will pick up sap from trees, jaggers. Fall is here allergies act up u can use benedryl.

I use Walmart brand in kids section "allergy relief" little pink pill cut in half. Use peanut butter or oil on pill put in back of throat hold mouth shut for minute & blow in their nose. It will tickle & cause tongue to come out & lick their nose pill goes down.

1/2 tab but Jonah is 16 #'s. 1/2 tab up to 12 #'s but if nervous consult web benedryl has been safe for dogs for yrs. Walmarts is 25 mg & I cut it in half. Don't just keep giving meds. I always like natural way to curb habit. When they start to chew start say no lick, no chew & maybe give them a dingo bone (Walmart) to chew on or refocus their attention. Good for teeth plus I do brush Jonahs teeth.

Also if u walk a lot remember all the stuff on the roads just like Papillon (I know wrong spelling)wipe feet w/washcloth. Cotons r very clean & lick, lick lick. So u just need to work on no lick & squeak toy & take their mind off the obsession.

Biggest importance is that everything sticks to their fur. everything so keep feet combed & u will be amazed what u comb out.

What a nice thing u did for ur new pup. Just some info they say again excuse my spelling that Cotons have a little Papillion in them. As we know all dogs per say r mutts.

hills as a line called science diet but they also have a prescription line of food. gipper is on the dd which is duck and potatoes which are hydrolysized plus oils and vitamins. the treats in the dd line are hydroly chicken w potatoes. my concern was would it be ok if they ate the same food? i dont want gipper eating what he shouldnt have and a i dont want charlie the coton to have an incorrect diet. charlie is biting his feet and sneezing. rescue vet declared him healthy except too thin. groomer did not see any obvious mites etc and suggested it may be allergies, or a learned behavior. vet appt is mon. i didnt know potato related to tear stains and his eyes were a mess too. im not sure vet knows anything about cotons.

This may be a stupid ques but what is DD food? If it is diet or weight maintenance I would give the new rescue just regular food made for age grp. Just select the brand u like & get the one for 2 yrs old. Diet should only be given w/vet recommendation. Dogs need both protein & fat for muscle & bone growth to grow normally.

i appreciate comments. charlie is at groomer w gipper today. everyone is correct not only are his feet a disaster from bad grooming he bites them. his eyes are very stained so im hopeful the groomer can help me get them turned around. of course i do not know what he ate at the puppy farm other than not enough. he loves to eat and while he prefers wet will eat the hills rx dd dry also. he has been ok w the greenies for allergy pill covers. i didnt know about potato staining relationship. are peas ok? my vet appt is mon. ona quick look groomer said she thinks his ears look ok and prob allergy rather than yeast or an infection and hopefully rescue vet wouldve caught yeast or mites. she said could be hair irritation but looks like allergy. thank you everyone. after this will be toileting. somehow he isnt as housebroken as i was told or i havent figured out his sign.

My 21 month old boy has been doing great on Sojos Fruit and Vegetable mix and Natures Variety Instinct Raw. The Sojos is reconstituted with water and it's nice and chunky. The Raw medallions thaw quickly and just mix in.
Previously he had been on Grain Free Fromm's mixed with Stella & Chewy's. He would pick out the meat and leave the kibble.
His teeth and whiskers are whiter now and he cleans his bowl.
Whatever you select, do go Grain Free and check that's it's also free of Corn and Potato Starch to minimize allergies and tear stains.

Sophie has skin allergies, so we have her on the Blue Buffalo Basics with limited ingredients. She gets a teaspoon of the wet mixed in with the dry. She has done very well on it and she also did well on the Verus. I found that the better foods are also very good for clearing up tear staining. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the better brands, BB, Verus, Wellness, etc. Good luck with your baby!

My breeder suggested Royal Canin as it will help to avoid eye staining and our 5 month old puppy has none to date. Not cheap but reduced if bought on Petco website and mailed to your house...no charge for shipping. Pretty much true for treats, etc.., too! Good luck. Your dog is a lucky fellow to have you!

gipper my rescue pappy likes broc and carrots. so tonight they got dry science dd on the bottom then canned smashed so they had to do something about the dry and the broc and carrots organic of course sprinkled on top. charlie put the veggies on the floor and ate the canned putting the dry on the floor. Gipper looked at him and put his veggies on the floor too. charlie went over to eat Gippers food and I said no, thats Gippys you eat your own. charlie went back and ate the dry but veggies stayed on the floor. Gipper did go back and eat carrots. Charlie is very skinny. I doubt hes ever had a veggie. He sneezes when we go outside and scratches his ears so Im suspicious of at least some allergies. Im concerned that the science diet dd which is hydrol duck in can or dry and hydrol chicken in treat might not be adequate for charley. Charley loves to eat it. He is a sweetie. It is obvious he has been hit and starved and subjected to fleas and filth but he is still loving and wanting to be loved. It is a pleasure to have him.

Coton dog food advice...
by: Kathy

Bless you!

My Coton was on Science Diet when I bough him, but I've moved him to Blue Buffalo Grain Free since the and he's done fantastic on it.

Just had his 4 year checkup and got a great report card from the vet.

I wish you the best. Your new Coton will be so thankful for you, when he gets over his ordeal.

:-)

Bless your heart!
by: Wendy (& Leila)

So proud of you for rescuing your Charlie. Hope he settles in soon.

I don't know anything about the dog food you already have. Can only tell you that Leila ate Blue Buffalo when she was little, then we changed to Fromm's after she decided she didn't want the Blue any more. Think there was some kind of change in the recipe for Blue or something. Plus Fromm's has some wonderful different types you can try. Favorite right now is duck and sweet potato.

Good luck with your new furbaby. Sounds like he's in a wonderful place!
