From a professional
by: Bathing Beauties Mobile Pet Salon

As a professional groomer, yes blowing them dry is perfectly fine. It's all in how it's done. I don't believe in cage drying at all! I towel dry using a patting , lightly squeezing method. Using several towels. Then a low velocity dryer and soft bristled brush starting from lowest point working up.

Cotons as large bird hunters?
by: Eileen, Trace's mom

I am new to the Coton world, having been accustomed to labradors, and having two of the goofy darlings now. Our newest addition to the farm family here in NC is a 5 yr old male Coton that was secured through SPR from their Louisianna zone. He's perfect, came body clipped, and 7 weeks after getting him, he just scared up a HUGE dove from the ground, then jumped up in the air 4+ feet and CAUGHT IT mid-flight! He winged it, and it was dazed 1/2 hr before flying off. The dog didn't bite it, play with it and the labs (did I say retrievers?)just stood there looking at Trace and the dove like .. what the ?? Anyone else witness these hunting traits in Cotons??

Re: Need help with curly Coton coat
by: Annie's Mom

Our little Coton 'Annie' has a curly coat. The best way I have found to groom her is to first give her a light brushing before bathing. When shampooing do not rub and scrub around like when washing your own hair. Instead, wet coat thoroughly, apply shampoo and use downward strokes to lather hair, rinse and repeat. I use a good quality cream rinse and apply the same way. Rinse well, with water running down over her. When taking her out of the bath I place towel over her and press against her coat to drain out water, and gently squeeze legs and paws. Then using a second towel I do the same. Then, I find a warm place, usually in front of an indirect type heater; not too hot here for sure. I begin combing from the bottom up. Begin with legs and work your way up the body. After legs begin at base of tail and work toward head. Once you get to the head the coat will be fairly dry; allow hair to dry once combed out. Be patient and gentle. Afterwards I reward Annie with a small treat and lots of play time!

about blow drying
by: Iris Miller

I have been told not to use high heat and dry indirectly, otherwise you can burn and irritate the skin and dry the hair too much. Just like our hair. When he went to the groomers they had the dogs in a crate with a blow dryer attached to the crate that they moved around in different directions. I am now Tuffy's groomer. I brush and comb him and get out as many mats as possible, bathe and rinse him, then after Tuffy's bath I use chamois cloths to dry and squeeze out as much water from his hair as possible, then I wrap him a thick absorbent bath towel and rub him dry, THEN, I use the blow dryer on low, finger combing as I use the dryer in my other hand held at a distance and not staying on any one spot too long, then I wire brush and comb his hair,Then Tuffy gets a treat for being so good and patient with me, he runs around like a nut and I collapse on the bed.

Coton Coat
by: Gale

That's interesting, Joyce. I never heard you weren't supposed to blow dry Cotons. According to the book How to Groom a Coton de Tulear the Right Way, blow drying is recommended as being one of the most important parts of grooming. It separates and straightens the hair. The groomer I take Luc to has always used a blow dryer on him ever since he was a puppy.

Has anyone else heard anything about not blow drying Cotons?

Curly Coton

What length is it? Do you blow dry it? My dog's coat is curly when it's wet, but it straightens out when I blow dry it. Kind of like mine :)
