Need homemade dog food suggestions

by River

I haven't been happy with any of the commercial dog foods I've given my Coton de tulear (1 1/2 yrs old). It seems the foods that are supposedly better for her are the ones she turns her nose up at.

So I thought I would try feeding her homemade dog food so I know for sure she's getting high quality nutrient rich foods. She seems to love everything that doesn't come out of a dog food bag - like chicken, beef, cheese, eggs, and even vegetables.

Does anyone else cook for their Coton? I would love some suggestions.

Thanks

The Honest Kitchen
by: Michelle

My 8'year old would only eat his food a short while, then boycott it altogether, only eating it late in the night when he realized nothing else was coming. I did extensive research and tried all the best grain free foods. I'm not gonna cook food for my dog...I rarely cook for myself. THRILLED when I found The Honest Kitchen dehydrated. My dog dances for joy at meal time and eats every bit. Tried the different ones, and settled on Force. It's human grade. You can get it with the meat, or add your own. I tell EVERYONE about this stuff.

Feeding dehydrated
by: Lenore

I have found that feeding my 5 1/2 mo old Coton has been easy, as she eats just about anything that falls to the ground!! However, after much research I have discovered dehydrated food from The Honest Kitchen. It is made or human quality fruit and veggies and you can add your own protein or purchase it with the protein, such as chicken, beef, turkey, duck, lamb, ,etc. My coton loves it and I add the tuna, ground turkey, pork and chicken. I have also found that this diet keeps away the red tear stains on her beautiful white fur....check it out. The Honest Kitchen.com great website!

dog food for a coton
by: Jean

I fed my Coton raw for awhile, but then I did a news story (I'm a reporter) where I interviewed scientists at the Va Tech Vet school on raw diet. They informed me that a raw diet is not same as killing prey in the wild... that raw meat slaughtered for human consumption is different than a fresh kill. They said that dogs are NOT immune to salmonella and ecoli and can get these things from raw meat that's handled and packaged for human consumption. Also they said that studies have shown that in homes where raw is fed, salmonella and ecoli is found in the house and in the vacumn cleaner (showing up likely microscopically through feces of pets) and if your coton is like mine he/she is on the couch, in the bed, and in close contact with all family members and could be spreading these things in your home. Again this all comes from VT Vet Researchers. I'm just passing along. I find it so interesting. I have talked to some owners who swear by it.

I personally feed my Coton a mix of dog food in the morning and make him dinner in the evening. I usually make him chicken and sweet potato. He loves it! I sometimes feed him beef or salmon too. He loves that as well.
Even though I feed him human food I prepare he still LOVES his canned food that I give him in the morning. Evangers canned chicken or beef dinner or canned duck and sweet potato, Chicken Soup for the Soul for dogs (with duck, salmon, brown rice and veggies) is another one he loves. Those are the brands that I'm told are human quality food. The only thing he doesn't really love is dry food.. even the good brands.. and he's not big on dog biscuits! He loves any kind of jerky.

You can never go back
by: Anonymous

There are so many benefits of feeding homemade dog food, but make sure you understand that once you do; your dog will NEVER want to eat regular dog food again. Most of the time this isn't a problem, but there are times when feeding commercial dog food is much easier - like when we board her.

I make different variations of a "hamburger" type patty in large batches and then freeze them so I can take out 2 a day. Basically it's either ground beef, chicken, or turkey mixed with either brown rice or sweet potato, a little vegetable oil, and throw in whatever veggies I have on hand - carrots mostly. I won't give my Coton anything I wouldn't eat myself and she loves it. She's happy and healthy and that's EVERYTHING!

DOG FOOD
by: SHERRY - COTTON

THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT. COTTON IS STILL VERY PICKY, I PLAN TO LOG ONTO THIS AND PERHAPS SHE WILL EAT IT ALSO. I AM STILL COOKING HER CHICKEN, RICE AND GRD ROUND FOR MOST OF HER MEALS, SHE EATS VEGGIES SOMETIMES, NEVER KNOW FOR SURE WHAT SHE WILL EAT. ONE DAY CHICKEN NEXT TIME SHE WILL NOT TOUCH IT. I KNOW SHE IS NOT GETTING THE PROPER DIET BUT AM AT A LOSS AS TO WHAT TO DO. SEEMS THESE LITTLE DARLINGS ARE JUST PICKY EATERS.

Diet options
by: Lulu's mom

I don't cook per se but my dogs do not eat commercial foods ever. We use the prey model raw diet here. You can google that for further info. We have Zero health issues, never need any never need to brush teeth or have professional dental cleanings either. I've been using this diet two years prior to that we followed the BARF diet but eventually decided after my h research the vegetables were unnecessary and in some cases the reason for digestive upset. Since changing to prey model we have not experienced any negative effects. We travel a lot with our little Lulu and have never had a challenge with it then either.
