Puppy love with Zooey

by Peggy
(Nebraska)

My baby is only 2 weeks old so I'm stuck with visiting for now. She is adorable and snuggles into my fingers and nuzzles and sleeps in my hand. I cannot wait to bring her home! I welcome any advice for a new coton de tulear lover.

Zooey
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

Congrats. Enjoy ur new puppy. Jonah now 4 was a good puppy & cool adult. Yes he did puppy antics & brought many smiles to my face & still does. His favorites are to steal my socks & run yet never chewing them & still luvs to rip up kleenex. LOL.

He luvs walks, dog park, riding in the car, visiting friends & their pets, visitors to the house w/or without their pets & when I foster is a kind soul to help prepare them for a new family. What a wonderful addition to ur family.

Enjoying your Coton
by: Diane

Congrats! You will LOVE your Coton. We got ours at 9 weeks and Spanky is now 1 yr 3 months old. He is the apple of our eyes. We love him so much we even moved just to give him a yard. Being you are already getting to know your Coton, the transistion to your home will not be so overwhelming. I know for us, puppy hood was a breeze with this easy going breed. We followed the advise of Cesar Milan (Dog Whisper). We always stayed calm and assertive. They are eagar to please and trive on "Good Boy" praise!!! (btw, not all dogs will experience separation anxiety, that is a learned behavior. I don't see it being an issue for you). Spanky is the most well behaved dog we have ever had. He sleeps through the night, he has no anxiety when we leave what so ever. Doesn't even bark at us, just watches us go (which, is hard for us to take but someone has got to work! LOL).

Her is some Coton info: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/cotondetulear.htm

Here is some training info from the Dog Whisper himself (i find this useful every day!): http://www.cesarsway.com/channel/training (he also has a show on the Nat Geo that is worth the watch).

And for the dog owner with Sep Anx, feel free to visit his site on that too: http://www.cesarsway.com/newsandevents/videos/Cesars-Class-on-Separation-Anxiety-Part-2

Good luck and post some pics when you can, we would love to see the little darling!

separation anxiety
by: Iris Miller

My Puppy developed separation anxiety. My advice to you is to leave him with a family member, friend, or neighbor who is home all day who will play with and train him if you will be away at work. Or, If you can afford it, a dog sitter or boarding where he will get the love and attention a baby puppy needs.I could have prevented a lot of issues with Tuffy If I had known that. (See my previous comments about Tuffy and his separation anxiety caused by leaving him home alone while I went to work full time.)
love and blessings,
Iris & Tuffy

right steps
by: Magda

That is great to hear that you are becomming a very proud Coton owner. Congratulations! From my perspective (my puppy is 6,5 months old, I took her when she was 4 months), the right socialization is the most important right now. Make sure that the breeder(with your help maybe) does the necessary steps in order to help your dog get used to different sounds (cars, vacuum cleaner, etc), backgrounds (grass, slippery flors), staying alone (veeeeeeery important), etc. I would even suggest that you make a plan for that. The more your dog learns now (until she is 16 weeks old), the better for you and for her. That is great that you have this opportunity to get to know your dog right from the beginning. I wish I had had this chance, maybe some things would be easier now (like my dog not being afraid of staying home alone...). Have fun with your puppy!
