When to feed? NEW
by: Reenie & CoCo

In my instinctual opinion, crate trained dogs may drink less instinctually to "hold" it as to mommy's schedule. I refused crate training for this very reason. Little dogs organs are just too tiny to "hold-it". CoCo drinks lots of water and Pee's as he wishes - outside when I'm awake and inside on "emergency" PeePee paddies as his body requires during the night or early morning.

I believe strict trainer-manuals forget to consider dog sizes. Even the Vet community administer the same dosage of vaccines and medicine for small dogs as big dogs. There's no "children" portion in the Vet industry.

Little dogs have all these "little dog" diseases, perhaps, as their biochemical system is overloaded from too strict eating schedules, Pee restrictions, Crate "lock-ups" and toxic medical dosages. That's my instinctual opinion.

A little dog may need a sugar boost to his blood more often than a big dog with larger stomach & spleen organs.

Some people, especially hypoglycemic, do best by nippling good foods hourly. Smaller organs (smaller dogs) may be similar in need.

Who taught us our little dogs should only eat twice a day? Are Trainers and Vets taught by big men professors with big bodies?

Just some food for thought.

I use sea-weed. The natural salt taste increases the drinking of water - seaweed is loaded with minerals too. I buy the "dry" in a Japanese store - $3 for a bag that lasts forever. I cut the dry pieces of seaweed into little tiny bits and simmer it with chicken drippings and carrot/potatoe water. The little dry seaweed pieces expand in the water. It tastes like Japanese soup - mmmm good! I then add the seaweed & juice to fried rice with chopped carrots, peas or green beans. I sometimes add tiny pieces of ckicken breast. CoCo likes his seaweed fried rice sauteed in luke warm olive oil. It's so tasty. Of course I eat my setving too!

The trick is to rotate foods, plenty of variety to ensure an array of vitimins and minerals. I don't use seaweed everyday. It's simply one of many natural foods to add to a diet.

CoCo pees once an hour aproximatly at 8.5 months (except nights he makes it the full night). And he's got 911 PeePee paddies if he needs 'em. He's not ever been confined to a crate so he's never had to hold his urine past his comfort zone. He drinks water as he wishes - his house dish is filled 3x a day. We have an extra water dish in the back play yard. He runs & drinks & plays & drinks & pees & drinks & pees. After play time he's good for a few hours at least. We afternoon nap & he's good while napping too.

His dry food is available as he wishes. I put just a tablespoon in his bowl at a time incase he's hungry for snacks between home-cooked meals. It's an organic mix with natural vegetables & fruits, no synthetic preservatives.

With free roaming food and Pee/poo techniques, and no crate, CoCo is very well behaved naturally. Your post asked what others do for Coton's. In my experience, the Coton breed is well advanced. Rather than a dog, I feel CoCo is an incarnated Guardian Angel! He doesn't behave like a "dog", he doesn't smell like a dog, he loves to be groomed daily & he loves to be bathed every Thursday for "our" weekly bed washing of "fresh" sleep sleep sheets. He sleeps with me on his set of sheets, his pillow, his side of the bed and we cuddle in the middle! He never leaves "our nest" to roam. His emergency Pee Paddies are in the ensuite and he comes right back to snuggle 'til mommy wakens.

CoCo is a great room-mate, a wonderful buddy and an energetic healing essence filled with so much love. He just wants to please. The lesser insignificant rules, the better he listens to my major Golden Rules. He's so excited when I cook his big nightly dinner - he waits & watches me closely from the dining room door and allows the kitchen free to me! He eats his dinner with me in the TV room on glass plates. Certain dog books write that shared meal time is healthy bonding. It sure works with CoCo.

Hope this helps your inquiry. I think it's what works best for each individual dog and owner. I am a free spirit and live best with few schedules, instinct leads us. CoCo fits in very well to no set times. He's free to Pee, Poo and eat as his body requirements wishes. I think that's lesser stress on his tiny vital organs. Having a little snack dish always available helps with his spleen function & instinctual sugar levels.

Feeding time NEW
by: Diane

Gleason is a gobbler... and finishes his food so fast that he runs to see if Spanky has finished yet. If im not there to watch, Spanky will walk away and Gleason will eat his food. Thus, I couldn't leave out food for them as Gleason would be the only one eating... so they are scheduled for breakfast and dinner, they eat on opposite sides of the room and when Gleason is done, i don't allow him to get close to Spanky while he is finishing up his meal. they also get treats through out the day.

hungry Spanky? NEW

I am wondering how many people keep food from their Coton until "feeding time"?
Tuffy is a grazer like me. I always leave a big dog size bowl of fresh water for him every day and his small dog bowl with about a cupful of dry food on a small rug in the kitchen. When it's actually breakfast or dinner he gets his "wet"(canned)food (or chopped boiled chicken or meat)on a separate dish near the water bowl. I emphasize the water because he's on prescription food to make him thirsty and hopefully dissolve the stone forming urinary crystals because he rrecently had bladder stones and surgery to remove them. This is a small dog disease because they tend to drink less and the urine gets very concentrated, creating a perfect environment for existing crystals in the urine to develop into stones.
