Struvite Urinary Bladder Crystals and Diet

My 1 1/2 year old Coton has been diagnosed with struvite crystals in her urine and the vet has ordered Royal Canin S/O prescription dog food. While it seems OK in the short term, long term maintenance on this food is not recommended, according to what I'm reading on the Internet. Does anyone have experience with their Coton having these bladder stones and any success with dietary guidelines? Thank you so much! Jan M.

I had a Coton that was prescribed this - he had severe kidney problems (a rescue that was neglected) initially his evaluation for kidney function was very poor - but he remained on this food for over 5 years and his creatin levels all stabilized. As long as you have your Coton under vet care and your he is doing well I wouldn't worry. It is better to listen to your vet. the vet knows your dog better then internet advice that is generic in nature. My baby Jacques passed over 10 years ago, but he lived a long happy life because of the change in his diet. You will notice that your dog has to pee more, but that is because the food is helping his system filter out the toxins. If the pee schedule gets too much for you, you may want to consider a doggie relief station for indoors, pee pads.

My Coton, Truffles has been on the Royal Canin for about a year for the same reason. The vet said it would be for long term

my poodle was on this food for a long time sure to kidney failure....really really helped him!
