Tear staining

by Joanne Pattona
(Rotonda Florida)

I have 3 Coton girls…2 all white. They are having terrible tear staining.Have tried everything, nothing works. Bottled water always. When I took them to Long Island for the summer they drank city water from the tap and no tear staining….same food. When I brought them back to Florida tried tap water and bottled water, just horrible tear staining. Is there anything that works.

What I use NEW
by: Dale

My little boy had bad tear stains and I’m not sure how I found out this works but I buy Walmarts brand of saline solution for contact lenses for sensitive eyes. Put on coton ball and wipe under eye. You can actually see some color on the cotton ball. Use every day doesn’t take too long to clear up.

Possible allergy to mold spores causing tearing NEW
by: Anonymous

It is interesting that the tearing did not occur on Long Island but does happen in Florida. Do you live in a humid area that is conducive to mold growth? Could this be an allergic or immune reponse to the presence of mold spores in the air - either indoors or outdoor air?

Tear Staining / Water/ Food NEW
by: Gita, Luxor's mom

Yes, I would like to agree that bottled water [by the way, Luxor's breeder recommended Evian!] as well as good quality food help to prevent those reddish tear stains. I started Luxor on Acana when it was still manufactured in Canada (also, Orijen); and three or four years ago decided to supplement the dry pellets with REAL meat.
Luxor needs about 300 cals a day. I buy ground turkey or chicken - whichever is on sale; then do the math: package weight/ calories/ number of patties + dry food cals. And - voila!

Home cooked NEW
by: Anonymous

Try a home cooked diet. Chicken, white rice, fresh string beans, raw carrot. Go to balance it.com for specific amount to feed your dogs. My coton used to have a red beard and feet no matter what I did. I only fed him premium dog foods from holistic pet food store. After doing home cooked diet for a few weeks, staining stopped.
