territorial behavior

Saylor Jane has within the last three months become very territorial over the couch with other dogs. She snaps and lunges after any other dog that even remotely looks at the couch. I have tried to stop her by telling her no and then making her get down off the couch when she does this but it is not working. Her sister, Aligrace who has and is the alpha, just ignores her and gets up there anyway but we have lots of furry visitors and it is getting worse.

Any one have any suggestions on how to stop this behavior?

Immediately give a sharp Ah, Ah pick her up & put her down. If she growls use the Ah, Ah to refocus attn back to u & put her down. The tone of voice is what works b/c it re focuses the growling action back to your voice. In other words they forget they growled.

The correction only works if u immediately put them DOwn. If You give them the option To get down themselves You lose the correction effect by repeating it To many times.

If she's lunging I would not allow her on the couch, period. Coton's are extremely smart and stubborn. She'll figure it out.

My Molly does the same thing to her sister. A trainer told me that furniture is a big hierarchy zone for animals, and to just gently remove her from the sofa every time she does it. It has not been a complete cure but she stops each time and realizes that I'm in charge and not her. Hope this helps!
