TRISCUIT-THE NIGHT OWL

by KATHY
(CANTON, PA)

TRISCUIT SLEEPS WITH ME AND LATELY HAS BEEN RESTLESS DURING THE NIGHT AND WILL JUMP DOWN OFF THE BED, THEN WANTS UP AGAIN BECAUSE SHE CAN'T JUMP THAT HIGH TO GET BACK ON. SO I HAVE TO GET UP, AND GET HER BACK INTO BED...THEN SHE WILL DO IT AGAIN SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE NIGHT, LEAVING ME TIRED IN THE MORNING.

I ALWAYS TAKE HER OUT AT 11 PM BEFORE WE GO TO BED. SHE USED TO JUST SLEEP THRU THE NIGHT, NOW I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. OTHERWISE SHE IS THE CUTEST LITTLE THING, BUT MY NIGHTS ARE NOT VERY RESTFUL...THANKS FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS OF WHAT I MIGHT TRY.

Try treats
by: Anonymous

Casper was nervous about using the ottoman at first. So, I put little treats on top of the ottoman. I would only let him have the treats after he jumped up on it, then another treat when he got up on the bed. We did that over and over about 6 times or so. After that he wasn't afraid.

Ottoman @ the Foot of the bed
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

I am like Emily & ever since Jonah was little have kept an ottoman at the foot of the bed. I brought the stairs home once from Walgreens but I took them back. Jonah travels at night he starts behind the bathroom door & ends out sprawled out on the ottoman under the fan or on my pillows at the top of my head.

It worked out well taking the ottoman from the chair in the living room since it is about 3w X 2d & I picked up a smaller one that did not take as much room.

climbing on the bed
by: Iris Miller

To Kathy from SC, and all,
my Tuffy also sleeps all over the bed he starts at my feet and moves to other spots.I think because a couple of times I pushed him off in my sleep with my feet when he was right on the end of the bed. That was a rude awakening. I think he is also looking for a cooler spot.I have a padded bench at the foot of the bed for him to jump on to get on the bed.Tuffy used to jump up on the bed but he has a trick knee and I am trying to keep it stable. He sometimes uses the bench to get off the bed, but mostly he jumps off. He gets off the bed around 10pm and eats almost all the dry food in his bowl and drinks water, then he gives a big belch and comes back to bed. Just like a man.
I have a pee pad on a tray near the front door for him. Since I had surgery I had to re train him to use it. Tuffy will use it in an emergency because I can no longer take him out as frequently as I used to. He is very smart, and would rather go out and do his business but knows the pad is okay if he can't get out. He always points to it with his nose to show me where he went.I always say "oh Tuffy, you made pee on the paper, GOOD BOY."(I replace the pad immediately). I say the same thing when he goes outdoors, except I say "Tuffy made pee outside! Good Boy! He knows treats always follow that,

Night Owl

Jasmine is able to get up and down on the bed, but the past few weeks she wants to jump on my wheelchair first then jump onto our bed. I only let her do that once, then she is fine getting in and out of bed herself. Like Triscuit she is up quite a bit during the night! I work 2nd shift and get home around 1am. I make sure we play before going to bed, but she will get up around 4am and either dig at the blankets before going back to sleep or go and check to see if anything is happening out side! I would really look into getting the steps so you won't have to keep picking her up. Good luck!

We also purchased a set of stairs from Bed & Bath, our Sasha uses it when she wants to either get up on down the bed. Most nights she sleeps in the bed. Also purchased a small set for the sofa

Cheap stairs
by: Regina, Steve, BB and Max

We have a set of cheap doggy stairs that we bought in CVS. They aren't exactly pretty, but we put them on the side of the bed so we don't see them everytime we walk into the room. Max is a bit shorter than BB and when he can't get up on the bed he just scratches until my husband wakes up and picks hom up. He won't let me pick him up, so we both end up awake. The steps seemed to fix it all, once he learned how to get up and down. And you can always put them away during the day if you really don't like them. By the way, we tried a really nice wooden children's chair at first, but it doesn't have carpet, so he wouldn't feel comfortable on it.

Ottoman?
by: Emily

Our little Coton Casper can't get up on our bed on his own either. So, I put a small ottoman on the side of our bed. Casper gets up a couple of times to check things out, and this way he can get on & off the bed on his own.

I have 2 of my 3 crate trained. The oldest one is 7 and she has always slept with me. I have a chair at the foot of the bed. She can get on the chair then on the bed. But I really wish she were crate trained. Has anyone ever crate trained an older dog? Daisy is great at night, but she seems to take up a disproportionate amount of the bed for a 10 lb dog :-)
