What could have been the cause of the sudden of my Coton de Tulear?

What could have been the cause of sudden death in my coton? She was 7 weeks shy of her 14th birthday and died very suddenly.

Besides bad teeth which I had removed 17 months ago Frankie was a very happy and healthy girl. At her last check up 5 months ago the vet said both my cotons (sisters) were in great shape and acted young for their age.

There were no warning signs or changes in her habits at all. She just made a horrible sound and launched herself into my lap and died in my arms in seconds. Her sister Daisy is so sad and lonely now, along with our whole family. Frankie was a dear part of our lives.

Thinking of Frankie and Your Family
by: Gale

I am so deeply sorry for your loss of Frankie. Unfortunately, sudden death in older dogs can sometimes occur without any obvious warning signs. It could have been related to age or an undiagnosed condition, such as a heart issue, stroke, or aneurysm—things that may not present symptoms in advance. Even with regular checkups, some conditions remain hidden until they become critical.

My dog, Luc, also died quite suddenly after a clean bill of health from the vet and not indicating any signs of illness until his last hours. I look at this as a gift - to both of us. While it was heartbreaking to lose him so unexpectedly, I was grateful that he didn’t have to go through a long illness. He was happy one minute and gone the next. I see this as a blessing.

It sounds like Frankie lived a wonderful life surrounded by love and care. Her passing in your arms, though incredibly painful, is a testament to the deep bond you shared and the comfort she must have felt in your presence.

I can also imagine how difficult this must be for Daisy. My cat is going through this now after losing Lucy. I’m not sure who is comforting who at this point, but she’s much more "clingy" these days. And that’s okay - we’re grieving together.

Sending you, Daisy, and your family my deepest condolences.
