Depends on what you want NEW
by: Marcia

It really depends on the type of cut you want. I usually keep my boy short, like in this link:

https://www.coton-de-tulear-care.com/beaus-summer-cut.html

I have taken him to groomers who had him fluffy, like a Bichon or Poodle. Well, since he is not a Bichon or Poodle, I really, absolutely, positively HATE that look on my Beau! I have recently moved, so I am looking for a new groomer. However, if necessary, I will make the 45-minute drive to his previous groomer. I would rather make the drive than pay for something I know I will not like.

Grooming NEW
by: Mitch Tuckness

It all depends on you.

If you are showing or want to keep your Coton so it looks like the 'breed specific' you don't cut them. You just have to brush them every day and I mean brush them good, or twice a day. If not, or you fall behind, it will mat and be out of control in a heartbeat.

With that said, I'd find some pictures of a Coton you like and take it to the groomer and explain to them how a Cotons hair is, and tell them this is how you want them trimmed.

I take Moriarty to a groomer every Friday. Twice a year I get him cut short, most would call it a puppy cut. Every week i have them trim his beard and bangs (I don't want the hair in his eyes, mostly because I think he would rather see clearly and I have read that years of eye irritation by hair can cause eye issues or cataracts. I also have them buzz his belly all the way up to between his front legs. I think it makes him cooler and it makes his tummy so soft for belly rubs, he loves it! I also do not have them trim his tail, ever. Tail and ears never get trimmed.

I love his hair about halfway between long never cut hair and short.

Here he is in an assortment of stages:

coton haircut NEW
by: sherry cotton candie

I know how you feel. First time I took my little girl for a trim they shaved her down. We were on vacation and I had gotten behind in grooming her but she was not totally matted. I hated it--but-- it turned out to be a blessing for her. It was in the hottest of summer and she seemed to love it. It grew out very quickly, she now has very long hair and has to tolerate the daily brushing.

It would be a good idea if you find the look you like to take a pic so the groomer can get an idea what you want. My rescue dog has curly hair so she is kept in a puppy cut which is easy to maintain. maybe even write down a few ideas for her if you do not take pic.

if you look at all the coton pics on this website you will see the right look (unless you are showing him) is more of a personal preference of what look you like and the lifestyle of the dog.

He will grow out quicker than you think, good luck.

I just had my 6month old male coton groomed last weekend. He had pretty long hair and had a few knots so he had to be clipped short. My groomer did an excellent job and knew what a coton was. She trimmed around his face but still kept that coton look. I agree that you should bring a picture to your groomer. Or maybe you can find another groomer that has more experience with cotons? I tried a couple different people until I found one that I really liked. But don't worry it will grow back!

Puppy Cut NEW
by: DeMarie Rossi

Well, there are as many opinions as there are dogs when it comes to Cotons and grooming - there are those who do not believe they should be cut, there are those that like in between and then there are those that like what your groomer did. Don't worry - Cotons fur grows quickly and this will be a bad dream :). For the next visit I would help your groomer out and google Coton pics on the web and print a few out. Since Cotons are not as common as most dogs a groomer comes in contact with he or she may have not really been sure what you want. I nice puppy cut is cute (this is what I do) it keeps them puffy all over and avoids the long hair on the snout and the squared ears and bangs, which I think is what you ended up with this time. Either way - it will be fine in 3 weeks (maybe sooner) and you can start fresh with a cut you do like.
