Why is she shaking?

by valentina
(santa monica, CA)

My Coton de Tulear is 9 yrs old and weighs 18 pounds.

A few times a day she shakes/trembles and pants for 10 to 30 minutes. This started a month ago. I took her to the vet, who said she doesn't seem to have any pain associated w/ it and not to worry.

Well, as it continues and seems to be doing so with more frequency, I'm concerned.
I read about something called White Shaker Syndrome. Could that be it? She seems very distressed when this is happening.
Please advise!

These dogs are definitely sensitive to chemicals. I agree whole heartedly with comment above. I would also seek out a Holistic Vet.. Can't hurt to have both Holistic and Conventional or even Integrative Vet for that matter. I have all three. It's made me a stronger advocate for my dog. They need us to speak for them !

Shaking and panting NEW
by: Iris

May be signs of a severe reaction from side effects of medication and flea and tick applications or the newer oral flea preventive medicines.A lot of vets are prescribing the oral pills that seem to be working on some dogs, but the Coton is notorious for being a breed that is less tolerant to chemicals.
My Coton is highly sensitive to drugs and chemicals.

Please do seek other Veterinary care and testing.
Keep us informed please.
I would also suggest eliminating people foods and dog treats they have a lot of additives that may be causing neurological problems. Try only boiled skinless chicken breast as a special treat.
PS I'm surprised that the vet didn't mention your dog also may be overweight( my Coton is 9 years old and weighs 11 pounds) which his former Vet thought was dangerous for a small dog and to cut back on his food portions and treats.

Best of luck
Love Iris and Tuffy

I agree with Gale and I would take her asap to another vet. I don't know anything about shaky white dog syndrome but that does not sound good. Did your vet check her temperature and kidney levels?

My 5 yr. old last may started trembling at times, panting and had excessive thirst. She had lepto which thru a miracle survived but she was scheduled to be put down.

Have blood work done, don't mean to scare you but this could be something serious. Good Luck, they cannot tell us when something is wrong so we have to be aggressive in our hunt for answers.

Change Vets
by: Gale

I can understand how distressing this is for you and your Coton. I find it disturbing that your vet would dismiss symptoms like this. I would suggest getting a second opinion. Whether it's white shaker syndrome or something else, you should find a doctor who will work with you to mitigate the symptoms as well as getting to the underlying cause.

Wishing your baby a speedy recovery - let us know how it goes.
