Will my Coton ever stop crying?

by Rachel
(Dallas)

My Coton is about nine months old and he cries whenever there is any barrier between us (a low gate, a closed door, etc.). It goes on and on and on. In particular, when I am in my bedroom and I leave him in the living room, the crying is so incessant and it escalated to whelping and sometimes barking. It can go in for at least an hour. Is this a phase? Will he outgrow this? Is there anything I can do to help him get more comfortable so this doesn’t happen?

Thank you!

rituals help NEW
by: leslie

I understand this is an old question, so I hope your issue is resolved with the maturing of your dog. I have to say, I think it's the breed; my Coton was a rescue at the age of three, and he does whine when I'm gone and he's left with my husband alone. He doesn't cry for us while we're out, but according to neighbors, he sits at the glass front door waiting to see us again. He's more attached to me, and follows me everywhere. This can be an advantage in terms of being able to trust him off leash when we're hiking (he's a trooper). We tend to give him a treat when we're leaving and he is distracted and knows what's coming - its good because of the ritual nature, which gives reassurance. good luck!

Will my COton Ever Stop Crying NEW
by: Pat

My Coton follows me around the house all the time. She does not like to have me out of sight. She is 3 years old and has never been away from me except for a few hours at a time until recently. I had to fly to Pennsylvania because my Mom got ill and passed away. I had to leave my Coton puppy behind. I really worried how she would do since we had never been separated. We have been separated 2 weeks. My friends are watching her and said she sits be the door waiting for me. She loves them like a second family, but they said she is waiting for me. When I call my friend I talk to my puppy on the phone and she looks all around for me. Your little puppy will eventually stop crying and become accustomed to you leaving her alone for periods of time. I have heard that this breed likes to be with people and while my little girl loves people-she loves following me and being with me all the time.

crying NEW
by: Janice

If your Coton is like mine, he just wants to be with you. He will follow you around the house,,,,like your shadow. The only time we seperate him is when we have to go some where. We leave him in the kitchen with his toys, bed and TV on low. This works for us. He cries when we return, as if we have been gone forever. We pet him and give him a treat and he's fine.
Good Luck!

Separation Anxiety? NEW
by: Anonymous

Is your puppy experiencing separation anxiety? How was the puppy's birth experience?

There is a homeopathic remedy called ignatia amara given to people when they can't stop crying. It's used for deep grief and sadness especially after the loss of a loved one.

I am an alternative health palliative care coach and homeopath. Another remedy might be sepia. The puppy might feel rejected unless you are always around. So, I encourage you to Google these two remedies and see if the symptoms match.

I have used sepia when a pygmy goat would not nurse her baby. After having 2 doses of sepia, the two where then inseparable with the baby nursing once again. The same thing works with human mothers that reject their babies. Give the mother some homeopathic sepia and it helps the mother bond with the baby. Also works with cows. I've used it for them.

Mom's coton is her shadow. Minnie doesn't cry when Mom is gone from the house for a little bit but she does waiting quietly by the front door waiting for Mom to return. Hope this was helpful. You could also simply Google natural remedies for puppies that are anxious and crying. There are a lot of natural things out there.

Dog crying NEW
by: Iris

There may be a health issue, need to relieve himself, and also separation anxiety, fear of abandonment.
They are like babies, I don't think it is " normal" for a dog to cry constantly, he is needing something. Does he have access to a pee pad, food and water where you leave him?
Love cures all.🐶💕

Separation thingy NEW
by: Anonymous

how old was he when you got him and did he cry from the beginning? (I doubt that)... You need to figure out the problem, it's almost impossible to answer many question posted here, all cotons are individual (and we are too)...
1. Leave him for a few minutes and then gradually increase time
2. Get him a friend (if you can afford)
3. Put him on all natural (raw meat diet, natural bugs repellent)
4. Come down to Houston and meet my little boy (LOL)
5. I really don't know what else to say as I have a few problems to deal with and a few unanswered question
